Why did you save me?”

Alpha Silas’s voice was incredibly weak, raspy from the blood loss and the pain of his crushed leg.

Lucas settled him into the back of the medical truck. The Lycan Prince turned around with a calm, confident mile. His voice was just as quiet as he replied, “Because I will never let Harper owe you a life debt.”

| stared at the deep gash on Lucas’s muscular arm, which was still dripping blood onto the snow. Then I looked at he deathly pale Silas in the back of the truck. I didn’t say anything. I simply pulled open the passenger door and :limbed into the front seat.

The truck was deathly silent on the drive to the outpost’s medical clinic.

Lucas focused on the icy mountain road. Through the rearview mirror, I could see Silas with his eyes closed, his >reathing shallow and labored.

While Head Healer Evans and her team treated Silas’s crushed leg in the emergency room, I stood in the quiet wooden hallway. Lucas leaned against the wall opposite me, his bright eyes fixed on my face.

Let me tend to the wound on your arm,” I said, picking up an iodine-soaked cotton swab from the medical tray.

Lucas instinctively pulled back for a split second before obediently holding out his strong arm. When the stinging iquid touched his cut, he let out a sharp hiss.

Does it hurt?” I softened my movements, my inner wolf whining softly in sympathy for her mate.

Lucas shook his head, but his eyes never wandered from my face.

Once the wound was cleaned and wrapped in a white bandage, I looked down to pack away the medical supplies. Suddenly, I heard him ask in a small, uncertain voice:

Harper… are you… going back to him?”

My movements froze. I looked up at him.

The great Lycan Prince’s ears were bright red. His golden eyes darted away like a large, nervous pup who had been :aught doing something wrong.

He almost died for you, and the things he said through the Mind-link…” Lucas’s voice grew smaller and smaller. If your heart softens because he saved your research, I-”

Watching how nervous this powerful warrior was, I suddenly smiled. I reached out and lightly tapped the tip of his

nose.

‘If you were so worried about me going back to him, why did you risk your life to save him?”

Lucas looked up abruptly, his explanation tumbling out fast. “I didn’t want you to go back to him out of guilt! Him saving your bag was his own choice; you can’t just throw your life away for a debt-

“Lucas,” I interrupted him, my voice soft but firm.

“I’m grateful to him for saving my mother’s journal today. But more than that, I’m grateful to him for helping me finally see things for exactly what they are.”

I looked deep into his eyes, speaking one word at a time. “Gratitude is gratitude. Love is love.”

Lucas froze, blinking as if he didn’t quite understand.

I continued packing the medical kit, my tone completely calm.

“Ten years was more than enough time for me to see if an Alpha truly loves me. Guilt, habit, extreme possessiveness… none of those are love.”

I closed the medical kit with a crisp click.

‘The things he did today were brave, but it is far too late.”

I looked toward the emergency room. Through the small gap in the heavy wooden door, I could see Silas’s pale profile as he lay on the treatment bed.

‘Some wounds have already scarred over. They can’t be torn open again.”

Just then, a faint, muffled sob drifted from the room.

paused. Through the crack in the door, I saw a single tear roll from the corner of Silas’s closed eye, quickly fisappearing into his dark hair. The once-proud Alpha had heard every single word.

Marc

watched silently for a few seconds before turning and handing the medical kit to Lucas. “Go take this back to the

nurse’s station.”

Lucas was still standing there like a statue. I gave him a gentle nudge. “Go on.”

He finally snapped out of it. He took the kit and walked down the hall with stiff, awkward steps. Halfway there, he topped and looked back at me, his tail practically wagging.

smiled at him and waved for him to hurry up.

Outside the window, the winter sun was setting, painting the snowy forest in a warm, golden light.

watched Lucas’s broad back until he disappeared around the corner and let out a long, quiet breath.

Ten

years of lingering attachment and pain were finally, completely laid to rest.

turned toward the patient room to say my final goodbye.

Not as his future Luna, but as a former pack member who had once fought by his side. I would offer him the hanks he deserved.

But I also knew that from this day forward, my eyes would only follow the Lycan who got clumsily jealous and hrew himself into danger for me.

The wolf who blushed over a single word from me, yet never hesitated to stand in front of me when a mountain was falling.
