Vincent beamed and nodded. “I agree.”
Iris‘ head shot up, her eyes wide with shock. “What wedding?”
“Yours and Kenneth’s, of course,” Wallace said, patting her shoulder gently.
Iris glanced around at everyone. Are they really this old–fashioned?
“He saved my life, and I’ll repay him. But marriage-”
“Iris, a life–saving favor deserves a life–long commitment,” Wallace cut her off firmly.
‘Grandpa, it was all a misunderstanding. A huge mix–up,” Iris stammered.
‘Child, you don’t want to take responsibility?” Wallace asked.
Iris was dumbfounded. Why amI the one who has to take responsibility?
་
‘C–Could I just compensate him financially instead?” she blurted out.
Finishe
‘Iris, Kenneth isn’t some random guy. He’s your blind date. You took his innocence, and now you won’t own up to it?”
Iris fell silent, speechless.
Kenneth scratched his head awkwardly–something about that sentence sounded off, really off.
Everyone, please leave. I need to talk to Kenneth alone,” Iris said.
Talk nicely. Don’t bully him,” Wallace called after her.
ris rolled her eyes internally. I’m your granddaughter, hello? What’s my grandpa thinking? Bullying a big, burly nan like Kenneth?
Soon, only the two of them were left in the hospital room.
I’ll give you a blank check. You fill in the amount,” Iris said flatly.
Kenneth’s brow furrowed slightly. Why doesmy chest ache knowing she doesn’t want to marry me this badly?
You’re not happy with this compensation?” Iris asked.
Kenneth said nothing, just stared at her intently, his gaze unwavering.
‘Kenneth, you don’t actually want to marry me, do you?!”
He lifted his chin, sounding arrogant. “It’s not what I want. It’s what everyone else wants. You have no idea how they looked at me last night–like I was some jerk who preys on women. Even Stella beat the crap out of me. My reputation is totally ruined.”

Iris looked him over, and sure enough, he was covered in bruises and scrapes.
“That’s rough.”
“You’re just now noticing?” he huffed.
“Fine, if you don’t want money, what do you want? I’ll get you a truffle tonic to help you recover.”
“Do you really think I need that?” he snapped.
Iris eyed him up and down, skeptical. “You don’t?”
“Come on, Stella’s the one who dragged me out of the car yesterday, not me-”
He coughed abruptly, cutting himself off.
Their eyes locked, and both of their cheeks burst into flames, hot and red.

“Let’s not talk about that. What are we going to do about the marriage?” Kenneth asked, crossing his arm over his chest, sounding like he was negotiating.
“Do you have a girlfriend?”
“No.”
“Funny, I don’t have a boyfriend either. What if…?”
“What if what?” he pressed.
“We have a marriage of convenience?”
Kenneth let out an amused chuckle. “Is marriage really this trivial to you?”
“Kind of. If we don’t do it casually, if we don’t act on impulse–do you really think we’d ever get married i this lifetime?”
Kenneth nodded in complete agreement. They were both painfully rational people. No lack of money, successful careers, and hearts that hardly ever softened for anyone. Marriage would’ve been nearly impossible for either of them.
“Kenneth, a marriage alliance is an alliance no matter who it’s with. You’ve met almost all the eligible girls from the top families, and so have I. You’re actually not half bad. We have to choose someone anyway- might as well be each other.”
“I’m in. Everyone else is so boring. We don’t need love in this life, but we sure as hell don’t need to be
bored.”
“Then should we call the families back in and tell them we’ve decided?”
Kenneth stared at her, serious now. “You really won’t regret this?”
“Regret it? Are you not handsome enough? Not rich enough? Or is your character bad? Don’t doubt yourself you’re a great guy. That’s exactly who I’m looking for: someone who’s already amazing on his

own.”
Kenneth blushed a little at the compliment. “You’re pretty great too. Really.”
“Then what are we waiting for? Let’s end this miserable blind date phase. No more learning the likes and dislikes of rich kids from every family. Let’s do this–let’s get married.”
“Let’s go.”
They high–fived, grinning at each other.
