Chapter 202 A Desperate Plea
She definitely didn’t belong in that hospital room. She was way too obvious a third wheel.

As Stella stepped out, she passed a group of young nurses gossiping by the hallway.
“His germophobia is next level!” one nurse said.
“He’s so hard on himself. Those scrapes on his skin are downright gruesome,” another added.
“He apparently scrubbed himself raw with a steel wool pad.”
“He’s so handsome–do you think someone hurt him badly?” ”
“Who knows?”
Stella tuned them out and walked past, only to bump straight into Frederick.
“Stella, heading back?” he asked.
“Yep. I have class. I need to hurry,” she replied.
“I’ll drive you.”
“No need.”
Frederick ruffled her hair gently. “There are dangerous people in Azure Peak City right now. I have to keep you safe.”
They’d all agreed on it. Even with bodyguards, her family and Elias would take turns escorting her out.
“Aren’t you busy?” Stella asked.
“Not for you.”
“Thanks, Frederick.”
They walked out together, and round the corner, they ran into Nolan. He looked haggard, but his eyes flew open and lit up with pure joy the second he saw Stella.
“Stella,” he breathed.
He was so excited he forgot all about his pain and sprinted toward her, ignoring the ache in his body.
Stella stared at him, utterly confused.
Frederick stepped in front of her, shielding her completely, his voice cold as ice. “Get lost.”
“It’s me! I’m your little guy–don’t you remember me?” Nolan urged, desperation in his voice.

Stella froze for a split second, a flicker of something crossing her mind.
My little guy!

She thought of what Tess had said–how Nolan might have mixed up his first love. She thought of the dozens of her paintings he’d collected, of that one painting of sunlight breaking through storm clouds.
Stella locked eyes with him, her gaze fixed on his blue irises.
And then it all clicked.
The little boy hanging from the cliff.
It was Nolan?
“Stella, you don’t remember? We were in Haven’s Rest together—”
‘I don’t remember,” Stella cut him off flatly, her voice cold and distant.
Nolan’s heart plummeted, like he’d fallen from a great height and crashed into the ground, broken and bleeding.
‘Frederick, let’s go,” Stella said.
Frederick guided her forward, but Nolan pushed through the pain and chased after them.
‘Stella, how can you not remember? You found the healer for me. You didn’t care about all my blood and dirt, and you took care of me, no matter what it took,” he rambled, his voice tight.
Stella didn’t even glance back.
‘Are you mad at me? Mad I helped Seraphina hurt you? I’m sorry. So sorry. Tell me what to do, and I’ll do it. Anything to make you forgive me.”
He reached out to grab her hand, but Frederick swatted it away hard. “Stay away from my sister.”
Stella shot him a blank look, her lips parting like she wanted to say something—but in the end, she said nothing at all.
“Don’t follow us,” Frederick warned, his tone sharp and unforgiving.
“I don’t believe you don’t remember. You must be mad at me. I was blind. So blind-”
Stella didn’t let him finish. She grabbed Frederick’s hand and quickened her pace.
“Don’t go. Please, Stella. Just listen to me, okay?”
His excitement split his wounds open again, and blood dripped onto the pale white tile floor, a stark, horrifying sight.
Thud.
Whether from exhaustion or crippling regret, his legs gave out beneath him.

He sank to the floor, his blue eyes swimming with despair, and begged, his gaze fixed on her retreating back. “I’m sorry. I was wrong. Please don’t leave me behind.”
Passersby and patients stared and whispered, pointing at them.
Stella’s identity made everything even more of a spectacle, and the whispers turned into loud gossip.
“What’s going on? Did that handsome guy get dumped by Stella?”
“No way! Our Stella and Elias are first loves–they’re perfect together!”
“That’s the guy who gave Stella a hard time at the art show, right? He was so cocky then. Why’s he acting like this now?”
‘I thought he had a girlfriend–the one who hurt that dog? Why’s he looking at Stella like she’s the love of his life?”
‘Ugh, a total player. He makes those gooey eyes at every girl he sees.”
‘He checked into the hospital for scrubbing himself raw with steel wool. Bet he thought he was filthy for hurting her.”
‘This drama’s better than any show–my mood’s already way better!”
Nolan stared at her unyielding back, his chest aching so badly he could barely breathe. It felt like he was
osing the most important thing in his life.
He scrambled to his feet, stumbling and tripping as he chased after her again.
‘Don’t go. Just listen to me, okay?”
No one would have thought the fearsome leader of the Lane family from Veyra–one of the most powerful men around–would ever be this pathetic, this broken.
‘What are you all standing there for?” Leo’s voice boomed. “He’s having a breakdown. Get him back to his
room now.”
At his order, the doctors swarmed over and pulled Nolan away.
His bodyguards moved to stop them, but Leo held up a hand to block them. “If he wants treatment, he stays quiet. Otherwise, get out of my hospital.”
The bodyguards stared at the bloodstains all over the floor, then slowly lowered their hands.
Leo treated Nolan himself, redressing his wounds personally.
“Ugh.”
Leo’s grip was rough, and Nolan’s brow furrowed in pain,
Leo looked at him with nothing but pure disgust.
