Tess had been pretty free lately. She’d gone back to Crestfall to mess with her wealthy father, who was infertile.
He’d abandoned her as a child just because she was a girl. Now he treated her like a precious
treasure.
People really did get what they deserved.
She rode her motorcycle, speeding through the night.
Vroom!
She tore through a tunnel and raced through busy streets.
Through the tinted visor of her helmet, she glanced to the side–and spotted a familiar figure
at once.
Frederick.
What is he doing in Crestfall?
Was there a car crash, or did he run into enemies?
Tess pulled a sharp, stylish drift and stopped her bike not far from the group. All eyes turned to her.
She took off her helmet and shook out her long pink hair. The night wind lifted her locks.
“Hey! Need a hand?”
She whistled at Frederick.
“Haha… Frederick Shaw, who’d have thought you’d need saving by a woman?”
“Get out of here,” Frederick said, wiping blood from his forehead.
Even then, he still looked aristocratic, not the least bit disheveled.
“Girl, he doesn’t want your help. Why don’t you come with me instead?”
At the man’s leering smile, Tess ground her back teeth and let out a cold smirk.
“Can’t. I’m working overtime.”

With that, Tess lunged forward and punched the man straight in the face.
Frederick froze for a second.
This woman is fierce.
“You’re dead, girl!”
Frederick quickly stepped in to help her.

Five minutes later, they stood back to back, looking down at the men wailing on the ground.
“Whoo! Mission accomplished. Clock out.”
Stella hadn’t given her assignments lately, but she still collected a base salary.
She owed it to Stella to help out when she could.
She glanced at Frederick’s car–it was totaled.
“I’ll give you a ride.”
Frederick looked at his wrecked vehicle. “Alright.”
She tossed him a red helmet. His hand paused mid–air.
“No way! You’re dissing my boss? I’m telling her.”
Frederick stared at her, confused for a moment. He took the helmet and put it on.
Vroom!
Tess hit the gas, and the motorcycle shot away from the scene.
They finally stopped at a roadside barbecue stand.
Frederick had never eaten at a place like this and felt out of place, but he sat down anyway.
“Do you know me?”
Tess pulled off her wig and used a wipe to take off her makeup.
“Recognize me now?”
“You’re a friend of Stella’s. Your name is…”
“Tess Marlow.”

Frederick smiled sheepishly. “Thanks back there, Tess.”
“Don’t mention it. You’re my boss‘ brother. It’s the least I could do.”
“Don’t tell Stella. I don’t want her to worry.”
Tess nodded. “But why didn’t you bring any bodyguards?”
She remembered Frederick always traveled with heavy security in Azure Peak City, so the press barely got any photos of him.
“I like riding alone to clear my head.”
Tess nodded in understanding.
“Their barbecue and beer are great. Wanna try some?”
Frederick looked around and smiled faintly. “Sure.”
She wiped the table with a wet wipe. “Would this be too weird for you?”
“No.”
Tess nodded, relieved.
Ring…
She frowned at the caller ID and hung up.
“Mr. Shaw, eat up. Don’t be shy.”
“Alright.”
Frederick took a bite, then a sip of beer. His eyes lit up.
He ate several more pieces of grilled meat.
“I have to drive, so I’ll substitute coffee for beer. Cheers!”
Frederick nodded, his gaze drifting back to her.
“What?” Tess asked, confused by his staring.
Caught off guard, Frederick laughed awkwardly. “Nothing. Have you known Stella long?”
“Over ten years.”

Finched
Her heartless father had thrown her away once he thought he could have another child.
Too bad her stepmother’s pregnancies all ended in deformed babies.
Now the old man couldn’t produce a single healthy sperm.
She’d been brought back to inherit the family fortune.
So she dropped by occasionally to act like the heir, show her face, and take control of his assets.
Still, she missed the days working for Stella more than anything.
“I’ll be in Crestfall for a while. If you need protection, I’ve got you.”
Tess patted her chest with a sincere, bold promise.
Frederick stared at her intently.
He’d never met a girl so free–spirited and unapologetic.
And now she was honestly offering to protect him.
She definitely had the skills for it.
“What? You think I’ll scam you?”
Tess laughed and waved a hand. “No charge.”
Frederick frowned slightly. “Then what do you get out of it?”

Tess stared at his beer, swallowed hard, and poured herself another coffee.
“My boss has a bright future.”
“You really look up to Stella?”
Frederick felt a quiet pride.
“Absolutely. You probably don’t know. She studied medicine, art, songwriting, and composing I tried to learn right along with her. The result was obvious: one genius, one failure.
She called herself a failure so casually, with no shame or insecurity at all.
A small smile lifted Frederick’s lips.
“You’re good at fighting.”
“Decent.”
She ate her barbecue with a bright grin.
“Mr. Shaw, are you done? I’ll take you back.”
“Alright.”
Tess reached for the bill, but Frederick stopped her. Their arms brushed, and both froze for a second.
A faint, unreadable ripple passed through Frederick’s chest, gone before he could catch it.
“I’ll pay.”
“Fine.”
After paying, Frederick was surprised.
They’d eaten so much, and it cost less than 200 dollars.
Best of all, it was delicious.
“Where are you staying? I’ll drive you.”
“The Royal Hotel.”
“Got it.”
