You Are Mine Little Sister (by Syra Tucker) novel Chapter 137

He deposited me into his car like luggage and clicked the seatbelt across me.

"I'll be back," came his gruff voice, and then the door slammed in my face.

The force he'd used on me throbbed through my skull, turning the ache into a drumline. It made keeping my eyes open feel like lifting garage doors.

I hated it here. It smelled too much like him. Felt too much like the monster.

A sob climbed my throat as I rattled the handle and slammed both palms against the door that wouldn't open. The seatbelt bit my ribs, the window fogged with my breath. My strength leaked out fast, leaving me limp against the seat.

Why was he taking so long? What was he doing?

My eyes slid shut and time blurred. I didn't even register the driver's door open and close, only the engine's low growl and the glide of the car pulling us into the night.

I let out a sleepy giggle, my head lolling sideways just enough to catch him at the wheel.

"Katya said you've been locking yourself away. What have you been thinking about, huh?" The words dragging out of me in pieces, blurred and crooked. My tongue felt like it had forgotten how to shape sentences. "Have you been thinking of ways to kill me? You know, since I'm a witness. You can't kill the parents and leave the child, right?" I laughed, a sound that was jagged and too loud for the cramped car.

He didn't look at me, though I noticed his knuckles turn white around the steering.

"I've actually been—" I belched then waved my hand like that could erase it. "—actually been wondering if my life's in danger. Should I... Should I call the police? I shouldn't just—" Another hiccup. Gods, I hated this haze. "I shouldn't just wait around for you to kill me, right?"

Still no response. Well, I didn't need him to talk.

"You won't believe the fun I had today!" I tipped my head back against the seat, another laugh slipping free "I bet over a hundred grand and poof, gone! I lost every damn penny. Those bastards cleaned me out!" I laughed so hard I wheezed.

That earned me something at least—a tilt of his head, the flash of cold grey eyes before he snapped them back to the road.

"Oh! And I even bet two of my jewels!" I jabbed a finger toward the back seat. "That Cat-Eyes witch, she talked me into it. Can you believe that? Played me like a damn fiddle."

I collapsed deeper into the leather, surrendering to the pull of exhaustion. "It's fine, though. They weren't important anymore."

Time blurred again. My brain was running on one percent battery, screen dim, shutting down.

"Tell me, Void," my eyes slipped close, the words dragging out. "If someone else had offered you double what Ginny did, would you have taken it and killed her as well? Does your loyalty only lie where the money does?"

"Get some sleep, Rali." His voice was iron left out in the snow.

"Nah. Tell me. I'm really curious." I tried and failed to open my eyes. "Would you kill me someday if the offer was good enough? What am I saying? You're probably cooking up ways to kill me as we speak."

A small giggle. "What were your thoughts when I returned home on my knees? Oh, I bet you were calling me all sort of names while I acted like your slave. I can imagine you calling me a slut, a fool—" I laughed. "—and all that while I was riding you, right? I mean, you wanted to leave me alone. Wanted to dump me after learning what you did, but I wasn't smart enough and crawled back. God, you must've thought me so stupid."
