Jenny’s upbeat energy made her tease Patricia a little, but she stopped herself, worried that Oliver might get the wrong idea and think she was picking on his wife.
“Horse racing is one of Golden Bay’s traditions. Some people get rich overnight, while others lose everything. It’s a place full of contradictions.”
“Have you ever been to the racetrack before?” she asked.
Patricia nodded. “Yeah, I went with my dad when I was a kid.”
“Did your dad like it too?”
“He mostly went with others for business.”
“That must’ve been a long time ago. Back then, the racetrack wasn’t this high-tech or comfortable. Did your dad ever come back in recent years?”
Patricia’s lashes lowered. “He… passed away a long time ago.”
Jenny froze. She straightened up, suddenly serious. “Oh, I’m sorry. I didn’t know.”
Great. Way to go, bringing up her late father.
“It’s alright. Honestly, I should thank you for reminding me. Sometimes I almost forget about it.”
Jenny quickly changed the subject, telling funny stories about pregnancy and sharing tips on taking care of a baby.
In the end, Jenny grinned. “All you need to do is focus on having the baby. Oliver’s got plenty of experience being a dad. He’s handled kids of every age.”
“Once the baby’s here, you’ll see. He’ll be the one waiting on you hand and foot.”
“You mean Sara and the others?” Patricia asked.
Jenny laughed. “So you do know about them.”
Inside, once Patricia had left, the group finally got down to business.
He watched the others pushing chips onto the table, wanting to join but hesitating. Someone nudged him with their elbow. “Roger, aren’t you betting?”
Nick stared at the table. “I’m thinking.”
“I say you should just skip it. You already owe them so much. If you lose again, you’ll end up even deeper in debt.”
Nick shot him a glare. “Can’t you say something positive for once?”
“I’m just looking out for you.”
Nick snorted. “If you really care, at least say something lucky.”
“Alright, alright,” the guy said quickly, nodding. “I heard there’s a rule at the track. If you race yourself and win, they’ll wipe your debts clean. Do you want to give it a shot? That way you won’t owe them millions anymore.”
“What kind of rule is that?” Nick frowned. “How come I’ve never heard of it?”
