He was lucky, though. He had a son in his twenties, just as sharp and good-looking as he was.
“Yes.”
The vice president hesitated for a moment, then gave up on texting and just called. “Mr. McKee, my son’s a physics major too. He’s looking for an internship right now. Do you think you could put in a good word for him with the R&D department?”
“Wait, isn’t your son a finance major?” Hector couldn’t help but laugh. He’d lost count of how many times the VP bragged about his son over drinks. Just last week he was a finance prodigy. Now he was suddenly into physics?
The vice president stalled. “You must be remembering wrong, Mr. McKee.”
“Come on. Just tell me the truth.”
The vice president sounded a little sheepish, but since he and Hector were on good terms, he went for it. “Look, I just want to give my kid a head start. Could you help us out, Mr. McKee?”
Hector blinked. A head start? What was he really after?
“Wait, does your son have a thing for Ms. Lawrence?”
“Well… I think Ms. Lawrence would make a great daughter-in-law.”
“Oh, really?” Hector let out a cold laugh and lit a cigarette. “You do realize Ms. Lawrence is Mr. Padilla’s sister-in-law, right?”
The vice president was stunned into silence.
When Hector walked into the office, everyone looked shocked. Someone he was close with came right over. “Mr. McKee, weren’t you supposed to be on vacation? Mr. Padilla said he gave you six months off to make up for all your unused leave. How come you’re already back? It’s only been a few days.”
Hector stopped and looked at him, suspicious. “How do you know Mr. Padilla gave me six months off?”
The guy looked confused. “Everyone knows. Mr. Padilla announced it at the company meeting and sent out an internal email.” He handed Hector his phone to show him.
Hector glanced at the screen and let out a bitter laugh. Of course. Only a capitalist could pull off something like this. Oliver had told the whole company that Hector was getting six months of vacation, making it sound like he was being generous and thoughtful. But now, since Hector came back early, he lost all that time off. From now on he’d never be able to use vacation as an excuse again. Oliver had played him perfectly. It was a win on every front.
No wonder Oliver had been so relaxed about his extra time off at Cloud Peak. Hector had actually worried that Patricia wouldn’t have anyone to look after her while he was gone. Turns out, everything had been planned from the start.
He couldn’t shake the feeling that he’d just fallen into a giant trap.
