Patricia felt a vague sense of worry. She called out to Marian and asked her to bring the fetal heart monitor. After checking several times, the readings kept hovering around 180. She hadn't been the anxious type throughout her pregnancy, but she’d listened closely during her checkups. The moment she realized something was off, she stayed calm and told Marian to get the car ready for the hospital. Not wanting to waste a second, she called Oliver while they were already on the road.
That afternoon, Oliver was in the middle of a high-level management meeting. These meetings only happened once a month, so they usually ran long and covered a lot of ground. Reports, updates, instructions—everyone had something to say. But this time, things took an unexpected turn.
Patricia’s call came in, urgent and out of the blue. Normally, she would just text if it wasn’t important, especially since she knew he was at work. Today, though, there was no message—just a call.
For a split second, Oliver’s heart clenched with worry. He raised a hand to stop the executive who was speaking, grabbed his phone, and stepped out of the conference room.
The moment he heard Patricia say the baby’s heart rate was too high, he couldn’t sit still. He didn’t even think about grabbing his jacket. He rushed downstairs, telling the driver to take him straight to the hospital. Upstairs, the executives were left waiting, confused about what was happening.
After about ten minutes, when Oliver still hadn’t come back, everyone turned to Lincoln. “Lincoln, when is Mr. Padilla coming back?”
“I’ll go check,” Lincoln said, putting down his paperwork and getting up. He walked out and looked around, but Oliver was nowhere in sight. Puzzled, he pulled out his phone to call.
“Lincoln, are you looking for Mr. Padilla?” someone asked.
“Yes.”
Marian spoke quietly from the side. “During her nap, the baby got really active. Miss Patricia felt something wasn’t right and asked me to bring the monitor. It was around 180 every time. She called the doctor and they told us to come in right away. The doctor said the baby was probably just a little short on oxygen, which can happen late in pregnancy. They said not to worry too much.”
Oliver nodded, his expression serious. “Take good care of her. I’m going to check with the doctor. Call me as soon as she wakes up.”
He hadn’t even made it to the doctor’s office when the department head showed up at the door. Oliver slipped out quietly and asked about what to do next. Only after confirming that this was a common thing in the last stage of pregnancy did he start to relax.
“Don’t worry, Mr. Padilla. Once she’s finished with the oxygen, we’ll check again. The heart rate should go back to normal,” the doctor reassured him. “Mrs. Padilla is in great health. There’s no sign of any underlying issue. It’s just the baby putting on a bit of pressure. From now on, she can try sleeping with her pillows a little higher. That should help.”
