“Sir, the signal jammers are installed, just like you asked.” The secretary had just walked the telecom guys out and was back in the living room with her report.
Atticus nodded. “Thanks.” He paused for a moment. “Push back anything you can on today’s schedule. Have Mr. Lincoln take the afternoon meeting for me.”
“Understood.”
“And run a background check on Hector McKee from Pacific Capital. I want that file on my desk as soon as possible.”
“Will do.”
Maggie poured a glass of water and handed it to Atticus, settling down next to him. She leaned in, her shoulder brushing his arm. “Try to relax, okay?”
Atticus let out a deep, frustrated sigh, then drained the glass in one long gulp. “She’s going to be the death of me.”
“She’s young. Everyone makes mistakes at her age. At least she had the sense to stop things before they got worse. Honestly, we should be grateful for that.”
Maggie always had a knack for smoothing over family drama. To anyone watching, she seemed firmly on Atticus’s side, but really, she was just trying to help Chelsea out from the inside. Her gentle voice and soft words had a way of calming him down.
“Grateful for what? That she didn’t end up with a baby?”
“So what if she did? It’s not the end of the world. They could get married. And even if not, it’s not like we can’t afford to raise another kid.”
He slammed his hand down on the coffee table. “Oliver knew all along about Chelsea and Hector. He kept it quiet. If this hadn’t blown up at the police station today, we’d still be clueless.”
“And that Hector… He wants all the perks of being a hookup, but expects to be treated like he’s the real deal. What’s that about? Once a fling, always a fling. Chelsea wants out and he won’t let her? He even sabotaged her blind date. Does he think I’m not paying attention?”
The more Atticus talked, the angrier he got. He yanked off his jacket and tossed it onto the sofa, then jumped to his feet. He glared down at Maggie, his words sharp and low.
“Don’t even think about turning off those jammers. If Chelsea manages to call Patricia for help, I’ll follow her all the way to Cloud Peak and make sure she can’t run again. Patricia’s about to have her baby. If you don’t want to make things worse, don’t encourage her.”
Maggie just stared at him, speechless.
