Atticus watched her freeze in place and lost all patience. He set down his cup and stood up, ready to walk over to Chelsea.
Chelsea was so scared she started trembling, then hurried to move. The windowsill wasn’t even that high, but climbing back and forth was exhausting. Anyone would be tired out by now.
Atticus sat there, calm as ever, sipping his tea and watching Chelsea struggle. Meanwhile, Patricia felt like she was sitting on a bed of nails. Her back was so tense she didn’t even dare to lean against the chair. Maybe it was because she was sitting so stiffly, but the baby in her belly kept moving around.
She carefully rested her hand on her stomach, feeling the movements through her cardigan, and didn’t dare make a sound.
When Atticus put his teacup down, his eyes drifted over to Patricia’s belly. He pressed his lips together and then walked over to Chelsea.
“I told you, if you just listen and act like you’ve got some sense, there’s no need for me to do anything. But if you don’t behave, trust me, I have plenty of ways to deal with you.”
“You really think I’d stop with Hector and let you off the hook?”
“Get inside and kneel.”
Chelsea heard the word “kneel” and nearly wanted to thank him for not making things worse. She almost wished she’d worn her smartwatch just to see if her heart rate had spiked over 180 in the last half hour.
“Go on,” Atticus said as he turned to Patricia. “Aiden will take you back to Cloud Peak in a bit. You’re almost due, so stop running around. Stay home and rest.”
“Does Oliver only care about Hector and not you? Who’s actually his wife here?”
Patricia stood up slowly and looked at Atticus. “Uncle…”
“Pattie, life is long. You and Oliver only see what’s right in front of you because you’re young, but people my age have to look further ahead.”
Atticus exhaled deeply. “Anyway, what’s done is done. It’s too late to fix any of it now. Go home. I’ll deal with Chelsea and Hector.”
The conversation went nowhere. Patricia hadn’t managed to change Atticus’s mind.
When she returned to Cloud Peak, the car sat parked for a while. She didn’t move, just stayed in her seat.
It wasn’t until someone opened the car door from outside that she finally looked up...
