Pampered by my three brothers: the return of the neglected heiress novel Chapter 1769

Chapter 1769: Did she have a choice? No.

[From: My Haines

There’s an emergency, so I’m flying out tonight. I’m sorry, but I will be home as soon as possible. Sleep well tonight, Gracie.]

Grace pouted as she read Haines’ message, sighing heavily with slight disappointment. She knew Haines had barely taken a break from work for his surgery. However, he still had to get involved if necessary.

"His surgery has been slightly delayed," she whispered. "Oh well. My man’s a hardworking man."

Grace shrugged, reassuring herself that it was fine. This would also give her extra time for work. So, she quickly composed a reply to him.

[To: My Haines

You’d better make sure you come home as soon as possible. Otherwise, I’ll be sad. I’ll be here when you come back. Miss you already.]

After sending the message, she took a shallow breath and set her phone down. Grace reached for the file on the coffee table in her living room. She had spent the whole day working on Cassandra’s case with Kiara and Cassandra. But something was still bothering her about the case.

She didn’t know what it was, but a nagging feeling persisted. She decided to pinpoint the source of this gut feeling tonight. After all, if Haines were here, she wouldn’t even bother and just toss it for the next day. Might as well take advantage of his absence to lessen her work once he comes back.

"Hmm..." she hummed, massaging her neck and stretching it from side to side. "Let’s see."

Silence fell in the living area as Grace reviewed the files she had already read multiple times. Cassandra’s trial was set, given its high-profile nature, which made it a top priority. So, it was moving faster than everyone else’s.

Their defense strategy was straightforward: cast doubt on the prosecution’s argument. It was sure to be a brutal court battle, particularly for Cassandra. The prosecution would undoubtedly dismantle every defense layer until Cassandra stood exposed before the world. There was nothing Grace could do about that, so she just had to make sure, even if it came to that, it wouldn’t seal off Cassandra’s fate.

"Wait a minute." Grace raised an eyebrow, cocking her head as she read through the case files, including Cassandra’s recorded interview from her first day in custody.

She blinked repeatedly, rereading the conversation in the file.

"I noticed this before, but it’s odd," she muttered. "Cassandra was arrested just a day after she called off her engagement with Jonathan Pierson. And the day she’s leaving Anteca for good."

Grace was well aware of Cassandra and Jonathan’s engagement and its subsequent cancellation. Now, thinking about it, something seemed off about this timeline. After Cassandra’s arrest, the police questioned Jonathan Pierson. However, due to their canceled engagement, the police did not press him much.

There was nothing inherently strange about that, but...

"Doesn’t he volunteer at the orphanage?" she murmured, rubbing her chin thoughtfully. "Hold on."

Grace set the file aside and delved into the Smith Family history, particularly focusing on Senator Smith’s background. Before long, suspicion clouded Grace’s expression. She sat there for a moment before pushing herself up, grabbing her jacket and keys.

She had a hunch about who might have tipped off the police about illegal activities at the orphanage. Now, she needed confirmation. As Grace opened the door, she was startled at the sight of someone standing outside.
