After lunch, Heather suggested playing cards.
At her age, the only way of spending time in the countryside was by playing cards.
Heather said, “Yanny, Shayne, come let’s play Landlord.”
Yanny looked at Heather stunningly, then looked at Shayne. ‘Playing Landlord with all of us? What on earth is this situation?’
Shayne, on the other hand, was not uncomfortable. He grabbed a chair and said, “Playing Landlord is fun. I’ll accompany you.”
Hence, Yanny could only sit down and accompany Heather.
Shayne said, “Let’s not bet with money, but with something else, if not it would not be fun.”
Heather smiled and asked Shayne, “What should we bet on? I’ll listen to you.”
Shayne took a stack of A4 papers and said, “Whoever loses has to have a strip of paper stuck on their face. What do you say, Grandma?”
Heather laughed so hard that she could not close her mouth. “Sure, let’s do that.”
Yanny frowned. “This is so silly, Grandma would not like that.”
Heather glared at Yanny and said, “Are you looking down on Grandma for being old? That I can’t play along with you young people?”
Yanny was speechless. ‘She’s stubborn as well.’
Hence, she took a pair of scissors, cut strips of paper, and stuck double-sided tape on it. The loser will have a strip stuck on their face.
After a dozen rounds or so, Yanny had three strips on her face, Shayne had the most with eight or nine strips, and Heather also had two on her face.
“Shayne, you’re not great at playing cards. It looks like you don’t know how to gamble.”
Shayne said shamelessly, “Grandma, I’m a good kid, I never gamble and play cards. I’m only doing this to accompany you. Usually, I’ll just play Landlord on my phone.”
Yanny was utterly speechless.
Usually, Shayne was a gambler who could easily throw thousands around when gambling, and sometimes he would even go all in. How dare he shamelessly say that he did not gamble?
Yanny remembered the first time she met Shayne, and she went to the bar to find him. He happened to be playing cards with his friends at that time. The table chips were very large, and a win or loss was several million or even dozens of millions.
Good kid? Being a good kid had nothing to do with Shayne.
Heather looked at Shayne and liked him even more. “It’s good that you don’t gamble. Good men that don’t gamble and drink are especially filial. They listen to their wives as well.”
They played until two thirty in the afternoon. Heather was slightly sleepy, so she pulled Yanny along into the guest room to rest.
Once they entered the guest room, Heather closed the door, smiled, and asked, “When I was here last National Day, I noticed a pair of men's underwear in your drawers. That belonged to Shayne right?”
Yanny was speechless. She realized that Heather had long known that a man lived here.
“Why are you not answering? Is it his?”
Yanny nodded. “Yes. It’s his.”
If she said no, Grandma would think that she had a messy private life.
Heather shook her hand and sighed in satisfaction. She said, “Shayne’s a good boy. He’s practical.”
Him? Practical?
Yanny thought, ‘Grandma, you don’t know him at all.’ Yet she did not dare say it out loud.
Heather laid on the bed preparing to take a nap. She instructed Yanny, “When two people are together, you have to give in sometimes, especially you. I know you’re like your mother, as both of you have a stubborn temper. Shayne might be good to talk to, but you have to give in to him occasionally.”
‘Shayne? Good to talk to?’
“Yanny, when you’re my age, you would know that in this life, meeting someone that you like who likes you back as well is not an easy thing. You have to cherish this. Don’t hurt each other’s feelings just for the momentary sake of winning in a fight. It’s not worth it.”
Yanny came out of the guest room and noticed Shayne sitting on the sofa watching TV.
Shayne asked, “Is Grandma asleep?”
Yanny walked over and sat next to him. She looked at him and said, “Master Shayne, thank you.”
Shayne was slightly stunned. He raised his eyebrows and looked at her. “Thank me for what?”
This was the first time he heard a sincere thank you from her. It was such a rare occurrence.
Yanny recalled back and said, “As far as I remember, ever since my mother passed away, Grandma has never been so happy like today for a long time. Thank you, Master Shayne for making Grandma laugh.”
Shayne looked into her eyes. It was as if this was the first time he could feel her most sincere, heartfelt gratitude.
“How do you plan on thanking me?”
