The atmosphere in the car felt odd.
It was rare for Heaton to be so candid with a stranger.
"You're not young anymore, and there are plenty of women that I know are worthy of you, Gerome. If you are interested, I can introduce some of them to you."
Gerome was startled by his attention. He smiled and said, "I am grateful for your kind gesture, President Fudd. However, work is my main focus now. I'll just wait for a few more years."
Heaton smiled and did not say anything else after that.
Verian reached out and pinched his arm discreetly.
Had the man taken the wrong medicine that night?
Gerome did not expect Heaton to be so friendly. He paid attention to the economy and the stock market. He noticed Heaton had appeared quite frequently in the economic news, and he could guess that Heaton was a ruthless and cold person. However, after he spent some time with him, he discovered that he was quite friendly.
Hence, Gerome continued to talk to him. "President Fudd, forgive my bluntness, your eyes…"
Verian was worried that he might have offended Heaton when she heard that question. She immediately said, "He has some trouble with his eyes lately. However, he's undergoing treatment for it, so he should be fine after some time."
Gerome understood what that meant, so he did not probe deeper.
The Maybach stopped when they arrived at the South Gardens.
Gerome thanked them. "President Fudd, Verian, this is my stop, so I'll be off now. Thanks for the ride tonight."
Heaton nodded and said, "No problem."
After Gerome got out of the car, Verian sighed in relief. She felt that Heaton had laid a trap for her, so she was not even bold enough to say a single word. She was afraid that he would be unhappy if she said something wrong.
She glanced at him to gauge his emotions. He still looked calm, so she did not detect any apparent emotions from him.
She cautiously asked, "Are you mad?"
"Why would I be mad?"
Verian could not tell if he was angry. She frowned and said, "If there's anything going on with Gerome and me, if there is anything at all… you can give me hell for it."
"What did you say?" Heaton suddenly raised his voice.
Verian recoiled as she bit her lips and said, "I mean, there is nothing between him and me, and I even showed him the diamond ring on my finger."
Heaton held onto her slim hands as he rubbed her diamond ring with his finger. He sighed and said, "It seems that this diamond ring is not big enough if you needed to flash it around before anyone notices it."
Verian laughed as she nuzzled against him. "Why don't you buy me a ten carat pigeon egg? The ten carat ones would look so insane… if I wear it in public, someone might rob me."
"It's safe here in North City. Who would dare to rob you, Madam Fudd? It's impossible."
"The name Madam Fudd isn't etched on my forehead. The other people won't know who I am."
Heaton suddenly frowned as he thought about Verian's casual and straightforward remark.
They were still secretly married. Aside from their family, relatives, and a few friends, not many people knew about Verian's identity.
"Let's hold a wedding, Riana."
Verian was extremely excited when she heard what he said. However…
"I'm having my second child. Is a wedding really that necessary? There's no need for that. I don't want the trouble. If we do hold a wedding, wouldn't I need to face all your relatives?"
"My family doesn't have that many relatives. You've met all of them."
"Still, that would be too troublesome. Plus, you can't see anything now. Let's talk about such a tiring event next time."
Heaton grunted a reply. She had a point, she was pregnant, and she would be tired if she had to take part in such a complicated event.
…
When they arrived home, Verian burrowed underneath the covers after her shower. She immediately hugged Heaton's waist.
She asked as she blinked, "You were in such a hurry to help Gerome. Were you worried that I might still have feelings for him?"
"You've already tied me with our marriage certificate. Do you think I'd be worried about that?"
As Heaton spoke, he began to lay on top of her.
Verian pushed her hands against his chest and said, "The doctor said no…"
Heaton's expression dimmed, pulled her hands away, and beside her. He said, "Stay away from me."
