Heaton was taking care of days worth of work he had left behind in the study while Verian was taking care of Little Pickle and Little Jelly Bean in the baby’s room.
Verian was staring at her son with a compassionate loving gaze as she carried Little Pickle in her arms. She said, “Oh, your brother has gained quite some weight after not seeing him for just a few days.”
“My brother sure can eat, alright. He drinks more milk than me.”
Little Jelly Bean peeked over with her little face and started teasing Little Pickle with a little rattle in her hand. She said, “Hey, look at this. Do you like it?”
Little Pickle did not even blink. His expression was cold as if he seemed completely uninterested in that rattle.
“My brother sure is cold.”
“It seems like he resembles your father.”
Verian’s arm felt a little sore so she placed the calm Little Pickle back into his cradle.
Little Jelly Bean asked after that, “Why did you escape with daddy, Monty? You guys were nowhere to be found the moment I woke up and you wouldn’t even pick up my calls. I actually thought daddy and you didn’t want my brother and I anymore.”
“How could your daddy and I not want you guys anymore? We were just thinking that if we told you, you would’ve no doubt cry and throw a fit to stop us from going. Thus, we decided not to tell you and besides, we were only gone for a couple of days.”
“Liar. You guys were away for so many days.”
Verian stared at the little rascal with a gentle gaze before hugging her into her arms as she said, “Do you miss me, Jelly Bean?”
“Hmph. I don’t.”
“Really? But I happen to miss you dearly. Can I get a kiss?”
Little Jelly Bean pridefully hugged her little arm and said, “Since you missed me so much, I’ll give you a kiss then.”
The little rascal gave Verian’s cheeks a very serious kiss. Verian could not help herself from kissing the little rascal’s face as she said, “Oh, our Jelly Bean is the best.”
As Little Jelly Bean sat in Verian’s embrace, she could hear the rain coming from outside. She turned around to look out the windows.
“Monty, it’s raining again out there. Can I not go to school tomorrow?”
Verian laughed as she said, “No one would not go to school because of poor weather now, right?”
The moment she finished saying that, a beam of light from the headlamps of a car could be seen shining into the windows from the courtyard. The glare hurt Verian’s eyes.
“That’s odd. Who would show up in our house at this hour?”
Verian stood up and walked toward the windows. She could barely see a blurry image of a car parked outside the courtyard while a male tall figure could be seen exiting the car. That silhouette looked somewhat familiar… it resembled… Yanni Quain?”
Little Jelly Bean rushed over too as she asked, “Who’s that, Monty?”
“That looks like daddy’s… friend.”
Ever since Sam returned alive, Yanni had completely cut ties with Heaton. However, they seemed to have already drawn a clear line between them. Verian was unclear about the details but all that she knew was that in terms of actual business, Yanni seemed to have already stopped interfering with Heaton’s.
The baby room’s door opened and Verian noticed Heaton. She said, “Heaton, I think I saw Yanni downstairs…”
“Yeah, I see him too. I’ll head downstairs to meet him.”
“Oh, okay. Go ahead then.”
Verian could not help but wondered what exactly Yanni wanted with Heaton at this hour.
…
Downstairs, outside in the courtyard.
The rain was pouring heavily under the shroud of darkness but Yanni did not have an umbrella in his hand. He was standing alone by the entrance and seemed slightly distraught. All of his prior menacing aura seemed to have been completely washed away by the rain and all that remained was his anguish and helplessness.
Heaton got out from the mansion while holding onto a black umbrella. He raised his brows slightly as he approached the metal gate.
He had witnessed Yanni in such a distraught state once before, and that was during Sam’s death.
Drops of rainwater trickled down the bridge of his nose while Yanni’s voice was filled with absolute fear and panic as he said, “Did Sam come looking for you before?”
