After parting ways with Whitney, Cherie was moving some textbooks with her classmates.
A group of girls were walking with each other throughout the way.
Cherie shared a room with four girls and all of them were in the same class together. They had bonded a day before classes officially began so they were quite close to each other.
Mandy was holding onto Cherie's arm as she asked with a smile, "Hey Cherie, you didn't share breakfast with us this morning. Where'd you wander off to?"
"I have a friend that I knew back in high school and she happens to be quite clingy but we're really close so we had breakfast together."
Mandy stared at her with a teasing gaze as she asked, "So, is that person a boy or a girl? It'll be quite the topic to talk about though."
Cherie replied with a laugh, "You know, if she actually had a sex change done in Thailand, she might actually pass as a guy."
Natalie Jones who shared the same room with her said, "I am truly envious of you having such a good friend to study with you in the same school. My best friend is now studying in the South. We are now worlds apart and if we were to meet, our plane tickets will cost thousands of bucks."
Mandy comforted her, "We can be best friends too."
"Fair point. Oh, that's right, since our semester has literally just begun and we have nothing much to do, why don't we grab a meal together as roommates tonight?"
Joy Lance who was also one of her roommates agreed as she said, "Sure thing. We can celebrate passing our SAT exams and somehow ending up as roommates together here."
The orientation ceremony for new students was held on the field in the morning.
Cherie nearly fell asleep after listening to a series of long, boring speeches by the faculty leaders.
Suddenly, Natalie who was standing in front of her turned around and softly whispered to Cherie, "Hey, Cherie, hurry up and look on the stage. It's Boyle. He's the most popular person in our school."
The instant Cherie raised her head and looked over, she could see the silhouette of a tall and fit man standing on the stage and giving a speech.
Boyle's voice sounded attractively deep. It sounded cold and even if they were standing under the blazingly hot sun, his cold voice made it feel extremely comfortable.
Natalie was completely lovestruck as she said, "Boyle sure is handsome alright. I heard he's in his third year and this happens to be his final year in school."
Cherie secretly counted in her head. If he was in his third year, would that mean that he was six to seven years older than her?
Natalie took a step backward and stepped closer to Cherie before whispering to her, "Man, this senior of ours has both the looks and smarts. I heard that he was supposed to be majoring in law in Capital City University but somehow due to unknown reasons, he switched to business."
"Oh, Natalie, you sure know a lot about this senior of ours."
"Heh, Boyle happens to always be the most popular person in our school. Before I entered, I was reading heavily on the school's forum and there were plenty of spicy and interesting stories written there."
Cherie stared at the man who was dressed in a white shirt on the stage from a distance. He looked elegant and attractive. Yeah… this man seemed to be the second person she had seen in her life aside from her father to look this attractive in a white shirt.
Natalie continued, "I've also heard that in the seven years Boyle was studying in Capital City University, he never had a single girlfriend. I'm not even sure if that's true or not. The post even said that most of Boyle's time is devoted into helping out his lecturers, working and making a career for himself… I even heard that his highest record was working four jobs in a single day. Truly, a workaholic indeed!"
Cherie replied with a puzzled tone, "Wouldn't he be dead from exhaustion from working four jobs in a day?"
"I heard that his family is extremely poor so he absolutely needs to rely on the scholarships our school offers."
Somehow, Cherie respected his efforts while her heart wrenched a little.
She grew up with a silver spoon in her mouth as a child in the Fudd family home. She was spoiled by her grandfather and even though her father was strict toward her, he still loved her very much. She could have anything she wanted as a child. Her life was extremely smooth sailing.
Working would be the furthest thing she would ever think of.
Hence, she listened to Natalie lament, "Sigh, men like him are only suitable to date but not marry."
Cherie was confused so she asked, "Why is that so?"
"Think about it. What if Boyle's results are extremely good? His family is poor and his journey into the working world would be challenging since he won't stand a chance against the wealthy kids. Hence, as hardworking as he is, he would still end up working for people. People like him will only be popular in school but be very insignificant in our society. Who knows, maybe his family has plenty of unpaid debt so if you were to marry him, wouldn't you also suffer along with him?"
Cherie felt indifferent to Natalie's opinion.
