All of a sudden, it dawned on Nadine why the pen had slipped from Brad's hand when he was signing the agreement. She couldn't believe that this jerk actually had the nerve to deceive her.
She plastered a smile on her face, helped him over to the edge of the fountain, and found a clear spot for him to sit. "I'm tired. Let's rest here for a bit," she murmured.
Brad, oblivious to the fact that Nadine had seen through his act, thought she must be tired. He obediently sat down and continued to feign drunkenness with a foolish grin.
Once he was seated, she turned her back to him and tried to suppress her laughter by biting her lip. Then, she abruptly gave Brad a little push.
Standing by the fountain, she watched as he lost his balance and stumbled backward into the pool. There was a loud splash as he hit the water.
"You've crossed the line, Nadine Scott!" Brad growled.
Nadine hastily took a few steps back, laughing merrily as she watched him shiver from the cold. "I thought you enjoyed pretending to be drunk, Mr. Hamilton. I just wanted to help you sober up a little! Anyway, it's getting late, so I'm going home! Goodnight, Mr. Hamilton!"
She paused before adding, "By the way, I'll be sure to call Ms. Sawyer to come rescue you. After all, she's your one true love, right?" With that, she bolted, paying no attention to Brad's yells behind her.
Nadine only stopped and leaned against a tree to catch her breath after she had run a good distance and was far enough that she was no longer able to hear his voice. "Even now, that scumbag still thinks he can fool me," she fumed.
Well, that was payback for his attempt to deceive her. She wondered if he would have the guts to pull off something like that again. Nadine couldn't care less if he caught a cold or not. It had nothing to do with her. He brought this on himself, after all.
