After saying that, Nadine chose to remain silent. She knew that Jean was Brad's Achilles' heel.

Anyone who mentioned her was bound to get burned. Sensing that the man across from her was about to lose his temper, she wisely clamped her mouth shut, pretending nothing had happened as she focused on her food.

Brad, however, casually responded, "I don't love her!"

Her eyes shot upward. It was as if she had just heard something incredibly shocking. Disbelief clouded her gaze.

Brad, as if anticipating her reaction, looked straight into her amber eyes and added, "Believe it or not, I've kept her locked away since she drugged me." It was his father's decision, but it was his, too.

Regarding the incident where Nadine and Sean were almost run over by a car, Jessie had turned herself in, accepting full responsibility and even providing evidence. Consequently, Jean was completely off the hook.

If she was guilty of anything, it was only of drugging Brad and using illegal substances. Even if convicted, she would probably only serve a couple of weeks in jail.

That would be far too kind to her. Hence, Brad and Daniel agreed that keeping Jean confined in their house's basement, where she was fed just enough to survive, was far more punishing than sending her to prison.

"Besides, she's now officially my older sister. Siblings can't get married," he continued, knowing Nadine had always been sensitive about Jean. He wanted to put her mind at ease, or at least try.
