Chapter 47
“Tad, Jaxon has to drive later, Winona tried to dissuade him.
Logan, the family patriarch, couldn’t stand being contradicted, especially in front of forge a
and everyone else. We have a driver,” he retorted.
Mildred chimed in. “Let Jaxon have a drink with your dad and Uncle Jorge. He hardly ever comes home.”
Jaxon stepped toward the seat next to Logan and said to Winona, “It’s okay. I can’t take care of you right now, so make sure you eat well. It’s good for the baby.”
Winona felt a spark of joy. It was the first time Jason had shown such concern for their
for their unborn child.
As Mikayla graciously sat next to Sylvia, Carlos sent her a photo and message: [What do you think? 1 designed the rings in my spare time and wanted you to see them first.]
The sketch on white paper showed two rings: one simple and elegant for men, and one delicate and graceful for women. She hadn’t expected Carlos to be so talented at design. Smiling warmly, she slid her phone back into her handbag, planning to reply later.
As Jaxon raised a toast, he noticed Mikayla’s subtle gestures.
Dinner was quiet. Afterward, Huxley dragged Jaxon into the study. Mildred took Winona to show her a new leather jacket she had bought. Meanwhile, Logan and Jorge, tipsy from a few extra drinks, sat on the couch trying to sober up.
Seeing Sylvia tending to Jorge, Mikayla felt relieved and stepped into the garden. Finding a quiet spot, she prepared to make a phone call. Before the ringtone even sounded, the call was answered on the other end. “Mika.” His deep voice resonated.
“Are you busy? Mikayla asked, unsure if it was a good time to call. Looks like need to ask julier’s brother, Xavier about their schedule and stuff the military base. Mikayla mused.
“Busy Carlos squinted slightly. The atmosphere around him turned icy, making a nearby guy in green freeze up and try not to breathe too loudly. Yet, Carlos’s voice remained smooth. “Busy missing you.”
The guy in green almost dropped what he was holding questioning silently, “Wait, am I hearing this right? Is this the same Mr. Ludwig that scares the pants off people in this dangerous place! Many at the military base wouldn’t even dare look at Carlos, let alone talk to him or hear his gentle voice. The guy’s curiosity piqued about the person on the other end of the call, the one making Carlos sound tender and even cheesy.
Mikayla bit her lip shyly at Carlos‘ words, “I just wanted to tell you that the rings you designed are very beautiful, and I really like them”
“I’m glad you like them.” Carlos replied and then asked, “Mika, do you miss me?”
“Mika… The man in green truly wished to lift his head to catch a glimpse of Carlos‘ expression.
Mikayla nodded and whispered. “Yes”
Carlos was happy with her response, his charming voice reaching her through the phone. “I miss you too
“I won’t keep you any longer. I’m at Uncle Logan’s house now” With that, Mikayla ended the call.
Carlos put down the phone after hearing the beep, and his eyes grew cold again. He turned to the man in green, his voice icy. “Go take your punishment! You’ve been here for a year and a half, yet you’re still making simple mistakes.
“Yes. The man hoped Carlos would pardon him, especially since he had seemed in a good mood after the call. But facing reprimand on his first day after a transfer was harsh enough.
“If I catch anyone spreading rumors about what happened today. Carlos let the threat hang in the air.
“Don’t worry, Mr. Ludwig. I didn’t see or hear anything today. The guy in green stood up straight, perfect posture. Just then, he caught a glimpse of Carlos, who had this natural arrogance about him. It reminded him of Mikayla, not just any acquaintance. Isn’t this a coincidence?’ the guy in green thought to himself.
As the man left. Carlos smiled playfully.
Mikayla sensed someone watching her and quickly hung up the phone. She turned around and, just as the expected, Jaxon stepped out of the shadows. His face was dark and brooding, and the air was thick with the smell of alcohol.
“You were on the phone with Carlos, right?” he asked,

Mikayla was about to leave, but she suddenly remembered something and halted. “So what if I was?”
Under the flower trellis, dappled lights cast onto Jaxon’s handsome cheeks, which were tinged with disdain. “Carlos doesn’t even dare come back to Xosa. Who knows what he’s doing out there? What makes him better than me?” His voice was thick with jealousy as he thought, ‘All of this should have been mine.
“Do you really think you can compare to him?” Mikayla shot back, implying Jaxon was not even in the same league.
“Mikayla, are you saying this because you’re mad at me? We’ve known each other since we were kids, ten years together. How could you change your mind so fast?” Jaxon asked urgently, desperate for an answer he yearned for
