Chapter 54
Carlos’s gaze deepened, and Mikayla realized her coat was still unzipped. It was winter sleepwear with nothing underneath. This was the first time she had shown so much to a man, even though she had dated Jaxon before, they had never gotten intimate
Mikayla pulled her coat together. “Isn’t the wedding still a while away?”
“I missed you! So I couldn’t help but come back, Carlos said
Mikayla was getting used to it: Carlos never kept his feelings for her hidden “Are you leaving again?” she asked.
Carlos took her hand and gently pulled her into his arms. “I leave tomorrow” He still had wedding details to manage. Smelling the
e tobacco on his clothes and hearing he was leaving again. Mikayla felt a void in her heart.
Tll be back as soon as possible. Don’t worry about the wedding. El make sure everything is perfect for you” Feeling Mikayla’s emotion, Carlos tightened his grip. The floral scent lingering on Mikayla from her bath wafted into his heart. Even through the layers of clothing, he could feel her well–proportioned figure, almost driving him restless.
“I can help prepare for the wedding if you’re busy,” Mikayla offered.
“You don’t need to worry about these things. Just take care of yourself, and on the day of the wedding, hand yourself over to me Carlos pulled back slightly, and his throat tightened at the sight of Mikayla biting her lips cutely. His body grew hot, and he almost couldn’t control himself
He looked away and changed the subject, pulling out a beautifully wrapped gift box from the passenger seat. “I came back in a hurry and didn’t bring much, but I did have this for you.”
“Can I open it?” This was the first time Carlos had given Mikayla a gift, so she was looking forward to it
With Carlos‘ permission, Mikayla untied the golden ribbon and opened the box.
Inside lay a snow–white, furry scarf adorned with delicate embroidered irises, which symbolized unity and progress together. There was also a pair of white leather gloves with a ring of white fur at the wrist and crystal beads on the back.
The craftsmanship was simple but refined. It was a limited edition from a luxury brand, highly sought after each season. There were only two sets made, using imitation rare for crafted to be indistinguishable from the real thing. One set had been reserved by a queen for her daughter’s wedding. Mikayla was amazed to receive the other set so easily. And Carlos had gifted it as if it was not a big deal
Carlos asked.
“You don’t like it c
“I love it” Mikayla shook her head. In the past, even the simplest gift from Jaxon would have excited her. But this, this moved her deeply because of Carlos’s sincerity.
“Carlos,” she called.
“Yes?” His gray eyes n
Inet thers.
“Don’t be so good to me, okay?” She wasn’t looking to touch on emotions anymore, she just wanted a simple marriage.
“Who else should I be good to if not you? His voice was hoarse with emotion
Mikayla was scared. She had experienced betrayal before and was afraid of falling into the same trap. Jaxon had sweet–talked her before, but with Carlos, her heart believed every word he said. She felt like she was hypnotized by him,
Mikayla threw herself into Carlos’s arms and wrapped her arms around his waist. She whispered “Carlos, I met Deidre at the Ludwig mansion today.” She didn’t want to admit it, but Deidre’s words had shaken her confidence.
Carlos paused and stroked Mikayla’s soft hair. “Don’t believe her. She and I may be friends, comrades, but we can never have that kind of relationship!”
“I believe you,” Mikayla said.
“Open your heart. Don’t be afraid,” Carlos said, his voice soothing and mesmerizing
After waiting for a response and feeling Mikayla’s weight get heavier against him, Carlos realized she had fallen asleep.
“Mika………” he whispered. She’s asleep?‘ he thought, glancing at the time. It was indeed late.
His phone vibrated twice, and Carlos glanced at the screen. Carefully, he laid the sleeping Mikayla down on the back seat, covering her with his jacket. He touched her cheek gently, feeling her smooth and delicate skin, and tucked a couple of strands of hair behind her ear.
This was the third time he had seen her peaceful sleeping face. He couldn’t help but kiss her forehead softly. After a brief pause, he picked up his phone and opened the car door.
In the cold wind, Carlos lit a cigarette and took a drag before dialing a number. “Any updates!”
“They did it secretly. We got only a small bit of useful footage Josiah replied. He was instructed to contact him immediately if there was any news about the deliberate incident, no matter how late,
A smoke ring escaped from Carlos‘ thin lips as he narrowed his eyes slightly. The swirling smoke added a mysterious aura to his refined face.
“We couldn’t see the hirer’s face clearly. The person wore all black, including a hat and mask, Judging by the height, it was likely a man, around six feet tall, Josiah reported.
