In the afternoon, Sophie was on edge, waiting for a text from Jenna. She clutched her phone like a lifeline, pacing up and down the second-floor hallway.
"Ms. Sophie, everything alright?" the housekeeper asked, glancing at her with a hint of curiosity. From earlier that day, Sophie had been restlessly circling the floor, worry written all over her face.
"Oh, nothing," Sophie shrugged it off with a little white lie. "Just stretching my legs."
The housekeeper nodded, suggesting, "If you're looking for a walk, the back garden's a nice spot. Mr. Gordon won't be home for dinner tonight, so feel free to eat whenever. If there's anything special you fancy, just let me know, and I'll have it made."
"My brother's not home tonight? Is he tied up with work?" Sophie questioned. Normally, her brother's team handled his business affairs, and it was unusual for him to skip dinner at home.
"I'm not sure, Miss. I'll let the kitchen know," the housekeeper replied, quickly shifting away from the topic. Sophie's curiosity only grew as the housekeeper left.
Something's definitely fishy here!
Quietly, Sophie tiptoed downstairs. In the kitchen, she overheard two maids chatting while preparing dinner. "I heard Mr. Gordon's meeting up with Emmalee tonight. They haven't caught up since college, right?"
"Didn't Emmalee have a thing for him back then? Did they ever date?" one asked.
Sophie froze outside the kitchen, straining to catch every word.
College? Her brother had a girlfriend in college? How did she not know this?
Eager to learn more, Sophie caught snippets of their chat: "Seems like Mr. Gordon and Emmalee are meeting at the Grand Hotel. I'm dying to know what their deal is."

Enjoying the story, to much victimising Sophie, they could at least try to target others. Hope at some point Sophie comes clean and forgives James and explain her view of loving the boy James was. Just so they both learn and move on. Really needs to be some consequences for the instigators instead of being let go. Sandy needs to see Vanessa is using her as a cover, and Sandy needs to wake up to herself, or be held responsible by her father for alienating the people she was supposed to make contact with. Hope the reporter brother is keeping an eye on what Vanessa and Odie are up to, and that he has he’s own justice in store. Hope he becomes like Reese a good partner. Hope James lives and finds he’s HEA. Need to put Nicole in prison , no release and several lifetimes , with all the evidence on the crimes she’s committed just to get her out of the way guilt free. More about what’s up with Gordon....
Excellent novel!...
