Chapter 45
A guard suddenly runs through the door almost
taking it out of its hinges.
“Alpha! Our rogues were
attacked!”
“Rogues?” I ask.
“The rogues that work for me. They watch the borders for our pack in exchange for food and money.” Warrick
starts to walk out. “Let’s see
what they’ve found.”
We all rush out to the front
of the house and see all the
warriors running to the forest, meeting up with who
I can only assume are the
rogues.
“Alpha Warrick!” The rogue
leader that I now remember
seeing at the
festival–Crow–rushes
towards us with two other
rogues behind him. They get close to us carrying bodies
and then drop them in front
of us.
Warrick looks back at Colt.
“Are these men from your pack?”
Colt looks at them and he
and I both nod. I also
recognize them.
“There are more of them.” A
warrior shouts running out
of the forest.
“We caught a few others at the border!” Another one
says.
“Finally! This is what we
were waiting for, right? Ezra made a move!” I say.
Colt and I run after the men
and wait at the edge of the forest with Warrick, Victor,
Garret, and the others.
Everyone waits quietly in
anticipation to see what
comes out of all of this.
We finally see them coming back and suddenly I spot
very welcoming and familiar
face.
“DASH!” I shout.
Without a second thought, I
rush in and hug him.
“Curls!”
“Well, well, well. Look who’s back.” Warrick says. The way he says it makes me feel
uneasy.
“Don’t you dare do anything
to him. He is my friend.” I quickly say.
“He could be working with the enemy for all we know,‘
Garret says.
“No. I am not. That’s why I
am here. I…we, have things
to tell you. We ran and we
were being hunted.”
“We?” I ask and look back to
where more men come
holding James and also Colt’s
younger brother and sister,
Miles and Bryn.
Seeing James, my heart swells with happiness and
sadness at the same time.
“James!”
His face is pale and his eyes hold anguish. He looks up at
me but there is no smile
there, only sadness.
I run and hug him.
“Colt!” Bryn and Miles rush
to their brother.
“Miles! Bryn!”
Bryn immediately hugs him.
“Colt! Ezra has gone crazy! He killed Dad!” Miles quickly
says.
“I know…I know…”
Colt pulls Miles in making it a group hug between the three of them.
“James?” I look up at him. He
finally stares at me.
“He…he killed her, Cass…he
killed her. Lauren is…dead.”
His eyes water and his b*dy
starts to shake.
hug him tightly trying to console him as he starts to
cry. As I do this, I watch
Warrick walk closer to Dash.
“You ran…” He tells him.
Dash slowly nods. “I…I ran.”
“That was on me. I led him
and the others.” Colt says.
“They were following me
and my actions.”
“Silence.” Warrick calmly
says to Colt who quickly
closes his mouth.
“Tell me the complete truth, why are you here?” Warrick
asks Dash.
I am sure he just used his
power on him.
Dash immediately answers. “Ezra was going to kill us
two.” He motions to James
and himself. “We were
hunted by his men until we reached the borders of your pack. They didn’t stand a
chance here. As for them…”
He points to the twins. “She
was scared and didn’t want to
be left behind and HE has important information.” He points to Miles.
Warrick turns to Miles and
gets close to him. “What
information?”
“Assassins. He is sending assassins.” Miles quickly says.
Warrick seems unamused.
“Oh. We can handle an
assassin.”
“Not just one but multiples.”
Warrick nods uninterested
and turns around walking
back to the house.
“Bring them.” He says to his men but Colt and I walk with
them making sure that they are not treated like prisoners. I hold James’s hand trying to keep comforting him. This is not something that would fly
well with a mate but Colt
understands and I am glad that he doesn’t see it in any other way than just family
love. He understands that to
me James is my brother.
“How is mom?” Colt asks
Miles as Bryn stays latched to him in a hug while they walk. I understand why too.
Colt gives that sense of safety.
Miles shakes his head. “Not
good. The last time I saw her, she was at the hospital and
the doctors said that there
was nothing they could do. She either would come out
of that dying state herself or
not.”
“Damn it. And the others?”
Colt asks.
“Ezra killed Dad and
declared himself Alpha when
Dad would not give in to his demands of attacking this pack. Kaecy immediately rose up and challenged Ezra
but Ezra won and as
punishment, he took Kaecy’s
eye out.
“Ezra won?”
“Yeah, he was in a wild state,
it is like it wasn’t even him in
control.”
“And Kaecy didn’t come with you?” I ask.
“No.” Miles shakes his head.
“He said that he would slow
us down but he was the one
who planned our escape. He is the one who told me to tell
you about the assassins.”
“Damn. I hope he is safe.”
Colt mutters.
We follow Warrick, not to his
office but to the war room.
“How are our borders
looking?” Warrick asks
Victor.
“All enemies in the vicinity
have been taken out with the
exception of two who we
kept alive. There are no
more threats.”
Warrick nods and walks over
to Dash. “What do I do with
you?”
Dash lowers his head waiting for judjemen.
I want to come to his defense but I feel like undermining him right now might not be
the best thing. So, I wait to see if he makes a good
decision on his own first.
Warrick, in a pensive state,
nods. “Since we are at war…I
will pardon you but…betray me again and it will be your
head on a pike.”
I shake my head and whisper to Dash. “Don’t worry, I
wouldn’t let him do that.”
Warrick’s head yanks in my direction and he narrows his
eyes at me while Dash is stunned in place looking at
me like I have three heads because of the way I just
undermined Warrick.
“He’s my friend.” I tell
Warrick.
“I don’t care.” He replies.
“Well, I do.” I mutter.
He ignores me now and
turns to the others. “The rest
of you are to stay in your
rooms guarded unless I say
otherwise. You are not guests
here.
Stay here. I’ll have someone come get you when your rooms are ready. Tomorrow
we can discuss this in more
detail.”
He starts to walk out and
takes Victor with him. “Let’s
go see these two new
prisoners and what they
have to reveal.”
When they are out of the
room and the doors are
closed, Dash speaks.
“What the hell happened with him? I thought I was
dead for sure or at least we should be in the dungeon right now. He would never
let me slide like that.”
“Cass happened,” Colt says. “He seems to want to keep
her around and…happy, so
he’s been acting very
different.”
“Cass? Who the hell is she to
have such an influence on
him?” Bryn asks with
attitude.
“Cass is Alpha Warrick’s
daughter.”
She looks at me with
surprise but her face still
carries that dislike
expression. And for a
moment there I am tempted
to command her to slap
herself.
I almost laugh, thinking
about it.
“So it was true then?” Dash
asks and Colt nods.
“She is also my mate,” Colt
says.
Now they are all surprised.
I love that he refers to me as
his mate even though it is not completely official. This man really has my heart.
“What?! Why?!” Bryn asks with a look of disgust.
“What do you mean why?
Because we love each other.”
Colt snaps at her.
“You really love her?” She has a condescending tone.
“Are you really going to start right now?” I look at her ready to start something too.
“I am not starting anything. I just don’t understand what
he sees in you.”
“He sees me. That’s the
thing. He sees who I really
outside.”
“Well, that’s a good thing in
your case since you have nothing else going on for you.”
“You know what?! SHUT
THE F**K UP!” I shout.
She opens her mouth pointing her finger at me but not a single sound comes
out. Her eyes widen.
I now realize what I did and
although I am surprised, I
am not upset about it one
bit.
“Oh, look at that. I don’t have to hear you anymore.” I give a big genuine smile.
She tries to speak again but
nothing comes out.
This power is starting to feel good.
