She Can't Be Your Mate novel Chapter 40

"Devina?" Dylan hurried into my room and put the back of his hand onto my forehead, sending waves of pain through my body. "You're burning up." I pushed his hand away and sat up. "What-" He stopped mid-sentence when he came to a realization, of what? I don't know. "Come on, we gotta get you to Sam."

~Devina's POV~

Dylan scooped me up into his arms and jogged outside to his car. He opened the passenger door and carefully placed me in. With every touch from him, it sent ripples of pain through my body.

"J-just stop!" I screamed, making him flinch in surprise. "Don't touch me!" He nodded and ran to the other side of the car, hopping into the driver's seat and rushing to find Sam. The pain was starting to subside but my head was still unbearably throbbing. After a while we got to the pack hospital, Dylan picked me up again, making the pain return. Before I could tell him not to touch me, a curtain of gray fell over me.

"What's happening to her?" I heard a familiar voice ask. I immediately smiled and open my eyes.

"Zane," I mumbled, still smiling like a little kid in a candy shop. Both Sam and Zane snapped their heads in my direction and Zane shook his head, a sad expression taking over his face.

"It's Dylan. I'm Dylan." My heart dropped and suddenly I couldn't hold back my tears anymore, I could see it was Dylan now as he calmly walked over to me.

"Devina, you're in heat. A special kind because Zane is an Alpha and you're human, things are a little different for you." I tried to sit up but I was too weak. "Zane left and unless he comes back, you will die."

~Zane's POV~

As I was kissing Ashley's neck, I couldn't get Devina out of my head. Something felt off. Something felt wrong. My phone started vibrating in my back pocket and I quickly reached for it.

"Baby, just ignore it," Ashley whined and I rolled my eyes. "Please?" She started kissing down my neck again and took my shirt off. The phone rang again but this time Ashley yanked it out of my hand and threw it against the wall. There goes my phone.

After a few hours of repaying Ashley, we were interrupted by a knock on the door. I quickly got off her and pulled on some pants. When I opened the door, my fists immediately clenched.

"What the hell do you want?" I growled. "Here to take my toys away too?" Ashley came up behind me in only her undergarments and kissed my cheek.

"She won't make it if you don't come back." I took a step backward and shoved Ashley off of me when she tried to "comfort" me.

"Why should I come back?" I finally said making Dylan furrow his brows.

"You'd let her die?" I don't want to say it, but maybe destiny made a mistake. If we were meant to be together, then why aren't we together now?

"I'm better off without a mate." Dylan clenched his fists, probably mad about my willingness to give up. But what's the point in trying?

"She doesn't deserve this Zane! You're going to let an innocent human girl die because you simply want to give up? What's wrong with you? I get it, you don't want the same thing to happen as it did with April but that doesn't mean you can throw away some girls life." Before he could say anything, his phone rang. He looked at the caller ID and immediately answered it. "Sam? How is she?" I focused my ears on their conversation.

"She wants to talk to Zane." Before I could stop myself, I grabbed the phone from Dylan's hands and held it up to my ear.
