She Can't Be Your Mate novel Chapter 41

"Put her on the phone." I heard a few muffled voices before the phone was handed to Devina. I could tell because her breathing was ragged and spaced far apart.

"D-don't." Was all she said at first. I furrowed my brows.

"Don't what?" She took a deep breath and started coughing.

"Don't come. I don't want t-to do this anymore. Please just let me die." She mumbled once she got a hold of herself. By the time she finished her sentence, I had already made up my mind and was hopping into Dylan's car. I let him drive as I talked with Devina.

"Sunshine, I'll be there shortly just hold on okay?" She whimpered making my heart drop.

"No. I won't let you save me this time." My breathing started to quicken as I figured out what she was going to do.

"Don't run Sunshine. Stay with Sam, I'll be there soon. Please don't do this."

"It's over. I was supposed to die a long time ago, Zane." A tear escaped my eye and slid down my cheek.

"No! Dammit, Devina just stay on the line Baby! Don't run." And with that, she hung up, leaving just me and the endless beeping sound of the line going dead. Dead. I shook my head. "Fuck!" I screamed and hit the dashboard. "Go faster, Dylan! She's running away! If I can't find her she's going to die!" Dylan sped up as fast as he could, but it still wasn't fast enough.

After a few minutes, we finally reached the pack hospital but I could smell her scent. She headed into the woods.

"Here." Dylan took off his shirt and tossed it over to me. "Wouldn't want Dev knowing what you did with Ashley now would we, brother?" I caught the shirt and put it on over my head as I followed her scent.

"Devina?" I called out as her scent got stronger and stronger. "Devina?" I heard her ragged breathing again and followed the sound. She was laying down on the shore of a small stream when I found her. "Sunshine," I ran over to her and pulled her into my arms. "I'm here now." Her breathing got better and so did her complexion. She wasn't looking so dead now. Her blue eyes slowly fluttered open and I smiled. "Welcome back." Her features hardened and she tried to push me away. After a few tries, she finally got up and took a few steps back.

"What the hell Zane! I told you not to come!" She yelled, making my eyes widen. This was the first I've heard her cuss. She must be pissed.
