"Damn it! Damn it!" Jace growled when he heard the howling in the distance. He gritted his teeth and stared at the sky. It was a new moon. He was worried about Cane too and what was happening on his end, but right now, he couldn’t think about anything else, aside from ways to survive this battle.
Those warriors were almost immortal! How could they not die? Unless they cut their heads off in one clean move or ripped their hearts out, they would heal so fast, even for a shifter, the speed of their healing was insane. fгee𝑤ebɳoveɭ.cøm
In the distance, a warrior shifted back into his human form and approached Jace and Redmond hastily. His expression was one of sheer panic and mortification. "Beta Jace!" He called with a shaking voice. "The enemy has managed to break into the pack and now they are marching toward the pack house!"
"What about the pack members, have they all been evacuated?"
"Yes," he replied, but then he looked hesitant.
"What is it? Do you still have time to be hesitant about saying something at a time like this?!" Redmond snapped, he was extremely agitated. He was so hurt by the betrayal, but to kill those people, who had fought beside him for decades still didn’t settle well with him either.
However, the situation forced him to do so and he knew he was doing the right thing. He knew where he stood and he made it clear.
The warrior glanced at Redmond and spoke with a little bit of hesitation. "I think your warriors know where the safe place is. It doesn’t matter even if we relocate the others. If they manage to kill us all, it will only be a matter of time before they find the rest of the pack members and slaughter them too."
That was true. If their intention was to execute them, they wouldn’t spare a single soul and now with the Alpha away and the steady deaths on their part, their morale decreased significantly, though Jace tried to keep it up, it was clear to see how the Beta was also under a lot of distress.
"The frontline warriors will not be able to hold them back if they are already inside the pack!" Redmond stated the obvious, and all of them could hear the loud sounds of battle moving closer rapidly.
The air was filled with a thick metallic scent and the ground was covered with their decapitated bodies. They were going to be defeated if they couldn’t stop them soon, but then, there was nothing they could do to fight warriors who were hard to kill.
"Pull back and strengthen the defense around the valley, we will defend the safe place!" Jace growled the order. There was no guarantee they would be able to save their pack members, nor did they have a chance to fight them off for long, since their numbers had decreased significantly.
But at the very least, they had to try until the reinforcements came, if there was any, or until their last breath.
"Yes, Beta!" The warriors immediately shifted back and rushed away to relay the order to the frontline warriors.
After that, Jace sighed deeply. "Thank you for standing with us." He patted Redmond’s shoulder, but the warrior immediately swatted his hand away.
"Don’t talk in that tone with me, you are jinxing me," he grumbled. "The battle is not over yet. There is still hope, let’s go!"
The difference between Redmond and Jace was probably their alphas.
While Cane would always be present for his pack members and lead them into whatever murky waters they were going through, boosting their morale with just his presence, Gerald was nothing like that to his warriors. He would prefer to hide and let himself be protected.
Therefore, at times like this, Jace was a little bit down without Cane, so did the rest of the pack, especially with their constant loss, but it was not the same with Redmond. He was used to having a coward as an alpha, who would hide in the safe place and couldn’t care less about his people, so with or without the Alpha in the picture, he could keep his morale, even when the situation was not in their favor.
