"I'm not mad."
Silence hung in the air. What could Aurora possibly say?
She couldn't outright demand Craig cut ties with Walter and Magnolia, nor could she let this escalate to a full-blown fight, much less a divorce.
So, she had to suck it up.
Craig parked the car, glancing at the time. The plane was due in half an hour.
He sighed, trying to keep his patience. "You're pregnant. Brooding isn't good for you. If there's something on your mind, just say it."
"What do you expect me to say?"
Craig frowned. "Did Magnolia stir things up with you again?"
Aurora pressed her lips together, silent.
She wouldn't even look at him.
"Walter's been inviting me over for a while, and I've been making excuses. But then he played the guilt card... said I've been acting too high-and-mighty since marrying into the Lopez family."
Craig rarely spoke so much at once.
Clearly, he was trying to clear the air.
But—
"Why would he say you're looking down on them because you married into the Lopez family? Why did you give in after hearing that?"
Silence.
"Because deep down, you agree, right? Even though we're married, with a child on the way, you still believe we're from different worlds! When they talk like that, it feels like they're mocking me, not agreeing!"
The underlying meaning was clear.
And it was a test of Craig's stance.
Had he declined that drinking invitation, Magnolia wouldn't have made those comments.
Clearly, she was upset.
Craig quickly followed her, not even bothering to lock the car.
"Aurora!"
"Why bother? We're 'from different worlds,' remember? Why do you care?"
He caught up to her with his longer strides, grabbing her arm and pulling her back against him. "You know I'm not good at this. You know I didn't mean it like that. I thought having dinner with Walter and not contacting him afterward meant we wouldn't have to fight about it."
Aurora struggled briefly but couldn't break free, her eyes reddening.
"But Walter's daughter... she likes you!"
"You know I don't have experience in comforting you because we hardly ever fight! I have so many grievances I can't voice, I just have to keep them in!" As she spoke, tears streamed down her cheeks.
Aurora had her pride and stubbornness.
Being provoked by Magnolia like that would upset any woman!
