Ronan handed over eight hundred grand and a house to Adrian. Adrian was over the moon and quickly set a date for their engagement. However, Cordelia was fretting. She knew that too much happiness usually spelled disaster.
During the day of the engagement, Cordelia, while organising Ronan's clothes, looked at him and asked, "You don't have any schemes against my brother, do you?"
Ronan glanced at her, "He's not your real brother. Why are you so concerned?" He tapped her on the head.
"If he's not my real brother, why did you give him money?" Cordelia queried.
Ronan's hands, which were in the process of tidying up his clothes, came to a halt. "Things have gone this far, I can't not give it to him."
Cordelia was still uneasy, "You don't have any plans for him, do you?"
Ronan looked at Cordelia, "Do I need to?"
Yet Cordelia's heart was filled with unease.
The engagement ceremony was held in a fancy four-star hotel.
Shelley had already arrived; she was nervous too. Partly because she didn't like the bride-to-be, and partly because the money came from Ronan. She was fuming. But since Ronan had already given the money to Adrian, she couldn't do anything about it.
Kendra dolled herself up very attractively that day, and wore a dress that showed off her midriff. She was only three months pregnant, and it didn't show yet. The only thing on display was her belly, which she thought was sexy. Especially since Ronan was coming. Compared to Ronan, Adrian was nothing.
Adrian also invited Jamie, since he was his supervisor.
Jamie had noticed some changes in Adrian, but he didn't know that Adrian was the cause of his recent illness.
Jamie glanced at Cordelia across the dinner table. Cordelia and Shelley both seemed troubled. Ronan glanced at Jamie, then took Cordelia's hand. Cordelia knew he was doing this for Jamie to see, and felt a bit awkward.
Adrian was ecstatic that day. He stood up and raised his glass, "Today is the day Kendra and I get engaged. Kendra's parents have passed away, so everyone here is from my side. My supervisor and my family. Thank you, everyone for coming to our engagement party."
With that, he downed his drink. Cordelia also raised her glass in acknowledgement.
As Kendra went around toasting everyone, she mainly wanted to toast Ronan. She first approached Shelley. "Shelley, I'd like to propose a toast to you. I'm pregnant now, so I can only use water instead of wine. Hope you understand." Kendra's voice was gentle, irresistible to most men.
And today, in front of a key person, she was showing off her charm like a peacock flaunting its feathers.
