In the dead of night, the hospital corridor was silent. There was only a lone nurse on duty at the front desk, her head nodding as she struggled to stay awake.
The surveillance cameras in the corridor flickered with red lights at that moment, indicating a loose connection.
A man wearing a white coat and a mask, looking like a doctor, swiftly passed by the front desk and headed straight for Mrs. Hopkins’ room.
He moved cautiously, glancing around to ensure no one was watching. Then he silently pushed open the door and slipped inside.
The figure on the bed lay curled up on her side, seemingly deep in sleep.
The man crept closer, step by step, and pulled a knife from his sleeve. Raising his arm high, he aimed to plunge the blade downward with vicious intent.
Suddenly, his vision went dark.
The person in the bed sprang up and threw the blanket over his head!
Panicked, the man wildly slashed and stabbed through the fabric. Just as he managed to tear the blanket away, he found himself staring down the barrel of a gun aimed squarely at his forehead.
“Don't move if you don't want your brains blown out.”
In the dim room, Drew’s sharp and penetrating eyes gleamed coldly. He wore a roguish grin. Yet, the menace in his expression was unmistakable.
Just then, the ward door swung open.
Steven and Ian burst in with a team, surrounding the man completely.
“Mr. Brown, are you alright?” Steven asked, his voice filled with concern.
“Pfft, I haven’t even started yet. A blanket was enough to take this guy down.”
Drew easily disarmed the man and raised an eyebrow. He sneered, “Dude, how dare you try to be an assassin with skills like yours? Better practice more in your next life.”
His words were chilling.
The man’s face turned ashen. His legs gave way, and he collapsed to his knees before Drew with a thud.
“Talk.”
Drew’s cold eyes narrowed at the man as he pressed the gun barrel against his head. “Who’s your boss? Spill it, and you might get off with an attempted murder charge. You’d serve fifteen to twenty years, walk out, and live your life. But if you stay silent, I can't guarantee you’ll leave this room with all your limbs intact.”
“I... I’ve never met my employer in person. He only contacts me by phone!”
Sweat drenched the man wet. “B-But I have his number! We’ve exchanged texts! He wired me a million dollars just the day before yesterday and promised another million if I succeeded! We even talked on the phone half an hour ago!”
Ian, fuming with rage, stepped forward and frisked the man. He then pulled out a phone from his pocket and handed it to Drew.
“Take him to the police station. I’ll handle decrypting this phone.”
Steven nodded quietly. “Thank you, Mr. Brown.”
As they quietly escorted the man away, the room fell silent. It was as if the tumultuous events moments before had never happened.
After helping Bella, for some reason, Drew felt as if a heavy stone hung from his heart, nearly crushing the breath out of him.
An inexplicable sense of unease loomed over him. It was as though something major was about to happen.
