In the dimly lit room, Grant’s expression hardened into a cold, brooding gaze. Yet, he remained composed, neither arrogant nor meek, his eyes fixed on Lucas as steadily as the tranquil surface of a lifeless pond that has remained undisturbed for ages.
Their eyes met, and Lucas’s brow twitched violently. A chill crept up his neck, sending goosebumps racing across his skin.
“What do I know? Uncle, I don’t quite understand what you’re implying,” Grant murmured, narrowing his ghostly eyes.
“Heh, I see you’ve mastered Gregory’s art of playing dumb perfectly, just like a true Salvador heir!”
Lucas took a sharp drag from his cigar, purposefully exhaling a thick plume of smoke in Grant’s direction, knowing full well it would aggravate his health. His every move was taunting and provocative.
“Back then, you hired Jeremy and paid him handsomely to orchestrate the kidnapping of you and that bastard child. Throughout the whole process, you stayed in the shadows, masterminding every detail. You ensured they’d receive over a billion in ransom and even promised an additional fifty million as a reward. Fifty million! Twenty years ago, that was no small amount!”
Grant listened calmly, his expression detached and distant, as if merely observing a tragedy unfold before him. His gaze was as bleak and lifeless as a desolate winter night.
“Your plan was simple. To stage the kidnapping of the Salvador brothers, then take the opportunity to kill Justin. At that time, Gregory was only an acting chairman, with the true power of the Salvador Corporation still in the hands of the Old Master Nigel. Ever since Justin’s arrival, your status in the family plummeted, and the old man began to favor you less and less.
“So, you devised this scheme to eliminate Justin—your rival for affection and inheritance—and use your involvement in the kidnapping to avoid suspicion. The tragedy would reignite the Old Master Nigel’s love and concern for you. After all, without Justin, you’d be the sole grandson of the Salvador family. How could he not dote on you again?”
Lucas continued, “Heh, to think that a 15-year-old could come up with such a ruthless and calculated plan… You really were something, just like me in my younger days!”
Grant’s lips curled faintly at that last remark, but the thought only made him sick. He was like no one else. He was himself—peerless, untouchable, and above all.
“But back then, you were still too naive, too foolish. All you had was theory, and you overlooked the darker depths of human nature.” Lucas smirked, his laughter dripping with mockery. “You didn’t foresee Jeremy’s greed. He broke your deal and turned you into a hostage as well, demanding an astronomical ransom from the Salvador family. Worse, he even planned to release Justin while keeping you back as his personal punching bag, a bargaining chip to squeeze even more money out of the Salvadors.”
“Why? Because Justin, for all the drama, was just an illegitimate child with no claim to the family empire. But you were the rightful heir, the eldest grandson. Of course, the kidnappers would target you—who else would they terrorize? Haha! Poor nephew, you shot yourself in the foot!”
