Meanwhile, in the hospital ward, Mila stayed by Jace’s bedside as he lay unconscious.
At the same time, she turned on her phone. Like countless others, she was watching the shocking turn of events unfolding at the Salvador Corporation’s press conference.
When she saw Justin caught in a whirlwind of public opinion and her long-absent nephew appearing to present one piece of evidence after another to turn the tide, she felt a mix of emotions. Pride and relief filled her heart, yet beneath it all, a faint worry lingered.
Even if Arnold and Asher never spoke about it, everyone in the family could see it clearly—they had broken up.
Arnold had vanished without a word and traveled to Meridan. During that time, he had only made a single call to assure her of his safety, speaking briefly before hurriedly hanging up.
Since then, Asher has rarely been home. Every time he appeared, his handsome face looked haggard. His once-bright eyes had dulled, shrouded in a perpetual gray haze of sorrow that refused to fade.
Mila felt immense heartache for both of them, but she had no idea what had happened between them.
Now, Arnold had returned to clear Justin’s name, and he and Asher had a chance to meet again. Mila sincerely hoped that this opportunity would allow them to reconcile.
At that moment, a knock sounded at the door.
Mila responded. As the door opened, Wyatt’s trusted aide, Quentin, strode in. Dust clung to his clothes from his hurried journey.
“Madam Mila, are you facing some difficulty—”
The next second, Quentin’s gaze landed on the unconscious Jace lying in the hospital bed. His body trembled violently. He rubbed his eyes hard, his voice shaking. “My god… The resemblance… How is this possible?”
“It is not just a resemblance. In my eyes, they are the same person.” Tears welled in Mila’s eyes as her trembling fingers gently traced the striking features of Jace’s face. “Hugh is the son I carried in my womb. Even if he were reduced to ashes, I would still recognize him… He is Hugh. He definitely is!”
Quentin had never seen Mila so emotionally unstable. He felt uneasy as he spoke hesitantly.
“I understand how you feel. But Young Master Hugh was in that plane crash. The aircraft went down at sea. The rescue teams searched the waters for a full month. Not a single survivor was found. The official report was issued long ago. There were no survivors.”
Hearing those words, Mila’s chest clenched with pain. She clung desperately to Jace’s calloused hand as if grasping a lifeline.
Even after so many years, she still remembered everything about Hugh.
She remembered his hands—his fingers long and clean, his bones smooth as jade. But now, his hands were covered in grime, calloused, scarred, and stained with blood.
She did not even dare to imagine what her child had been through all these years.
