Chapter 21
Following George’s order to retreat, Stephen left sheepishly with his men. As Stephen walked away,
he overheard whispered discussions behind him.
“Ethan is a good person, yet he’s been arrested?”
“Yeah, who else cares so much about these widows besides him?”
“Arresting such a good person is really disheartening.”
Everyone knew deep down that nobody wanted to take care of those people. If someone were to manage the situation, how much money would they have to spend each year? They would have to misappropriate funds from other areas, like meal allowances or something
Liam stepped forward and said to Stephen, “Since Mr. Rivers isn’t keeping any women, shouldn’t we release him?”
.Stephen was fuming inside. “Release him? Just because he’s clean here doesn’t mean he’s
clean.”
He did not want to hear the discussions behind him anymore, so he quickened his pace and left promptly, leaving the other officials looking at each other in bewilderment.
“He’s the one who called us here, and now he’s the first to leave?”
“This is the most ridiculous thing I’ve seen in my entire career?”
“Our futures are all in jeopardy now.”
Liam stood there, looking dejected. Ethan was clearly innocent, so why would they not release him?
Zane walked up to him, patted his shoulder, and said, “Ethan was wrong.”
“Wrong?” Liam was confused. “What did Mr. Rivers do wrong?”
Zane sighed and looked up at the sky. “His mistake was being too exceptional. They won’t allow someone so outstanding to exist. The world has never allowed its heroes to grow old.”
Zane suddenly seemed much older as he slowly walked away. Liam remained rooted to the spot, unable to process the idea that being exceptional was a mistake.
He thought he had seen it all as the chief of police, having dealt with many criminals and their reasons for committing crimes. However, he now realized that some people’s reasons were utterly absurd.
Now, to have such an absurd group of people manage Riveria… Liam dared not think about it further.

Chapter 21
That same evening, news of Ethan’s arrest and Stephen leading a team to capture the women Ethan was supposedly involved with began to spread throughout Riveria. Several cities in Riveria had heard the news.
In North Hill City, Lytton–a town of over ten thousand people, a young man with bleached blonde buzz–cut hair sprinted frantically toward the town’s community center.
“Uncle Brandon! Uncle Brandon! Something big just happened!” he shouted as he ran,
his house was on fire.
as if
Inside the community hall, a somewhat thin man with distinctive features and glasses sat on a sofa, talking on the phone.
“I’m sorry, but we don’t grow tobacco here. We also never smuggle people across the border either. What you’re doing is criminal. I advise you not to get involved in such things.
With that, he hung up the phone and heaved a heavy sigh. Those were all things they to be good at. However, because of Ethan, they had to stop all those operations.
