"Cole? Is Cole here?"
The reporters swerved around, only to be stunned by my grim expression.
"Are you guys done with your questions?" I asked, my heart aching when I saw Lorraine cornered by them.
She shouldn't have been dragged into this.
I met her gaze and noticed a flash of helplessness in her eyes. I reached out to take her hand.
"Let's go."
Watching her turn her head to wipe away her tears, I couldn't help but feel disheartened.
"I'll clarify everything. If I find out that you're causing trouble to Lorraine again, you know the consequences," I warned the reporters.
Inside the car, Lorraine still hadn't recovered from the chaos earlier.
My heart ached when I saw her dazed expression. I touched her cheek. It was colder than I expected, as if she'd been standing outside for a long time.
"They didn't hurt you, did they?"
Recollecting herself, Lorraine seemed slightly embarrassed. "Honestly, you didn't have to come."
"Part of this is my fault too," I said.
Lorraine wondered if she was also my responsibility. Though we had separated, she still couldn't help herself from drawing closer to me.
Noticing her lack of response, I turned to her, thinking she was hurt. "Are you feeling unwell?"
"No," Lorraine replied, not intending to elaborate further.
Thus, I didn't press the matter as well.
As we drove toward the Sommerton residence, she suddenly said, "Just drop me off at the corner."
Watching her stiffly unbuckle her seatbelt and get out of the car, I couldn't help but call out to her, "Lorraine."
She turned around, visibly confused.
"No matter what happens, call me if you're in trouble."
