The Heart Left Behind (Cole and Yvonne) novel Chapter 148

Jonas eyed the doctor expectantly, his cautious little smile tugging at the doctor's heartstrings.

"Fine, but you must be careful with your wounds. No vigorous movements allowed."

Jonas had been through a traumatic ordeal, and being with me would give him a sense of security.

I had Murphy arrange the best bed for Jonas. He fell asleep almost immediately once he moved in. I figured he hadn't had a good night's rest in days judging from the dark circles under his eyes.

The ward had a conference room. I had Murphy call Lorraine over and waited for her there.

Hearing a knock on the door, I chuckled. "Why are you knocking?"

"The doctor told me Jonas moved in," she replied.

"I don't feel comfortable leaving him alone. Also, there's something I want to ask," I replied in a serious tone.

"You've seen Jonas' condition, haven't you?" she asked.

"How did you know?" I looked up at her in surprise.

"Who else would you care about besides Jonas and Xavier?" she teased.

Though it was a joke, I blurted out, "There's you too."

My reply made us both freeze for a brief moment.

"W-Why would you suddenly say that?" Lorraine embarrassedly fidgeted, tucking her hair behind her ear.

"It just slipped out." I didn't plan to explain further. She could take it however she wanted to, and the truth was that she did mean something to me.
