Xavier gritted his teeth and tried his best to hold back his tears.
I pulled on his covers, yet he refused to show himself.
"Xavier, are you alright? Are you feeling unwell?"
From the moment Xavier entered the room, he had been acting strange. I thought he had gone to bed early because he was tired. When I heard his sobs, I realized something was wrong.
I furrowed my brows and tugged at his covers. I was afraid that I would hurt him, so I said through the covers, "Xavier, talk to me. I'll help you."
I sensed movements under the covers. Before I could say anything, he popped his head out. "Daddy, are you really not getting back with Mommy forever?"
Even in East Harbor, Xavier had not been kind to Lorraine. He was also quite aloof toward me. I never thought that this would be the issue he was worried about.
"Xavier, I—"
"Xavier, rest well. We'll talk about your daddy and mommy another time," Lorraine interrupted me. I looked at her in surprise, only to see her signaling to me not to talk.
After finally putting Xavier to bed, I asked her what she meant.
"Don't worry too much about Xavier."
He knew all about it, but he was just in denial.
"I appreciate what you're doing." Lorraine hugged me. But when she spoke, her voice was still filled with disappointment. "But Xavier is still a young boy. We'll have to slowly let him get used to this."
She did not want Xavier to hate her when he grew up since they would still have to live together in the future.
I understood what Lorraine was trying to do. "Alright. We'll do it your way."
After finding out that Yvonne and I were never getting back together, Xavier had a terrible night of sleep. He kept mumbling in his sleep. It looked like it had really gotten to him.
