"Is this the contract?" Lorraine glanced through the document, her brows furrowing together. "Why go through the trouble of making something like this?"
"To make you feel more comfortable," I explained, sliding the papers toward her. "You can add any terms you want. For the time being, just consider it as playing a part to help me."
I wanted her to feel in control—not like she was being dragged into a deal she didn't want.
"Of course, you can say no," I added carefully. "But until this whole mess is cleared up, you might face more judgment from people. The pressure could get worse."
Lorraine skimmed the first few pages with pursed lips. Then, to my surprise, she picked up the contract, gave it another quick glance, and promptly ripped it in half before I could finish telling her to sign on the last page of the document.
"What are you doing?" I asked, stunned.
Her expression softened, and she shrugged, a small smile tugging at her lips. "I trust you. I don't need a contract to prove that."
"So… does that mean you're saying yes?" I couldn't hide the relief and joy in my voice.
She blushed faintly but nodded. "What do you need me to do?"
Though she didn't outright confirm her decision, her readiness to step into the role was answer enough.
Looking at her shy but resolute demeanor, a warmth spread through my chest. It felt gentle yet thrilling.
"Next week is my grandmother's birthday," I began. "I'd like to take you with me."
The party would be filled with socialites and influential figures. I wanted to take the opportunity to bring Lorraine to light.
Her brows knitted together in concern. "I don't think your grandmother wants me there," she murmured.
She wasn't wrong. Grandma's comments about Lorraine over the phone had undoubtedly left her feeling less confident.
"You'll be with me," I assured her, taking her hand in mine. Her palm was slightly damp from nervousness, and her cheeks flushed as she avoided my gaze.
