Seeing only three pairs of women’s slippers, Nathaniel began to feel a pang of doubt. Could he have misunderstood Frey’s situation?
As this thought crossed his mind, he felt a wave of panic. He had treated her so poorly that night, perhaps she had harbored thoughts of revenge.
He chuckled bitterly to himself. Could it be that she had been plotting against him all along?
Frey’s voice cut through his thoughts. “Mr. Nathaniel, we don’t have any men’s slippers here, so you don’t need to change into one.”
Nathaniel glanced at the small, cute rabbit slippers on the shoe rack and, resigning himself, stepped inside without changing his shoes.
The apartment, decorated warmly by Frey, was charming. Instead of a sofa, there was a plush carpet and adorable pink rabbit cushions. The walls were plain white, and Frey had set up a cozy projection area on the floor.
On the balcony were two fabric armchairs and a row of bookcases filled with Frey’s favorite books. He brought one of the chairs into the living room, where Nathaniel sat, looking out of place on the cute giraffe-print chair.
Frey went to the kitchen, poured a glass of water, and handed it to Nathaniel before standing awkwardly in front of him.
Nathaniel had seen the video of Frey being beaten and felt an intense, uncontrollable anger.
Despite their breakup and mutual disdain, seeing her hurt was unbearable. He had never meant for her to suffer any harm, even though he had caused her pain in other ways.
