Zachary was taken aback by this question and his heart skipped a beat, "This child is mature for her age."
It seemed like he had to be more cautious, or else Maria would soon learn the reason behind his abnormal behavior.
For the time being, he did not want her to know that Yvonne had returned.
He had to find a way to solve the issue between him and Yvonne. Otherwise, it would not be a good thing for their daughter to be a part of the mess.
"Dad, seeing that you are so silent, I assume that this is the reason right?"
"No." He answered, "Maria, there's news regarding your mom. I've already sent my subordinates to investigate her. You don't have to worry. She is going to come back really soon."
In the end, he did not tell her that Yvonne had returned and that she even went to her old kindergarten.
He was very neutral with Maria. He did not want to
lie to her.
"Oh, I thought she had returned," Maria's voice had a hint of disappointment in it. However, very soon she cheered up again to comfort Zachary, "It doesn't matter, Dad. Whether she comes back or not, I don't miss her. I am very happy to be with you and Grandma now."
"Maria, don't say that." He glanced at her little face through the rearview mirror. His heart ached for her daughter.
"Dad, you don't have to comfort me." She lowered her little head and did not look at him. There were traces of disappointment in her eyes.
Seeing this, he felt distressed. His heart skipped a beat and he felt a sharp pain in his chest.
He could no longer bear it and said bluntly, "Maria, your mommy is back. I'm sorry. I lied to you."
Hearing this, she instantly raised her head and looked at him.
He also turned and looked at her. The father and daughter duo stared at each other and they could clearly see the emotions in each other's eyes.
"Dad, is it true?"
"It's true," Zachary nodded and turned his eyes to the road again. "She has returned today but I have yet to contact her. Can you give me some time?"
Maria thought for a moment and said, "Dad, the reason why you picked me up early is because you are afraid that Mommy would come and take me away? Are you worried that I would leave you?"
He was caught off guard by the question.
However, that was not the case.
The reason why he picked her up so early that day was simply because of him acting on impulse.
In fact, even if Yvonne found her, she could not take her away.
She was enrolled in an exceptionally private school. Back then, they had gone through the formalities when she was enrolled and no strangers were allowed to simply bring any child away.
With Yvonne's sudden appearance, he had rushed to pick Maria up from her school. Now, she had noticed the shift of his emotions and he also realized that he was acting very childish. This was just a cover-up.
However, all his efforts were futile. Even if Yvonne and Maria were to be separated, it couldn't change the fact that Yvonne was her biological mother.
"Indeed, I'm acting so impulsively and so reckless. I picked you up in such a hurry because I was afraid that your mom would find you and she was going to take you away. I'm afraid it was like the last time when she just left you, I'm not prepared to lose you," Zachary was a little down and awkward. "Maria, I'm terribly sorry. I am so helpless in such a crucial moment."
"I won't follow Mommy. I know that it's not easy for you and Grandma to raise me. How can I just follow Mommy and leave? Daddy, you don't have to worry about it," Maria comforted him. "I will definitely stay with you and Grandma. You can rest assured."
Although the child had spoken and she had comforted him, Zachary still felt that there were things beyond her understanding.
