When Love Is a Lie (Whitney and Damian) novel Chapter 67

Half an hour later, Whitney helped Elijah out of the CEO's office and walked him to the elevator.

"Whitney, if anyone ever gives you trouble, you be sure to let me know," Elijah said, patting her hand gently and giving Damian a stern look. "Business can be messy, and misunderstandings happen, but now that we've cleared things up, that's the end of it. I know this kid—he wouldn't do anything to hurt you."

Whitney pressed the elevator button and smiled. "I know, Grandpa. Thank you for looking out for me."

Damian added quickly, "Don't worry. There won't be any more misunderstandings between us. Call me if you have anything next time, and we'll be here immediately."

Elijah snorted, "Next time?"

"There won't be a next time," Damian replied quickly.

Elijah shot him a warning look, then turned back to Whitney with a warm smile. "You two come over for dinner this week. It's been too long since I've seen you."

"Of course," Whitney agreed.

Samuel gave a few parting reminders. When the elevator doors opened, he and Elijah stepped inside.

"Goodbye, Grandpa," Whitney said softly. After the doors closed, she turned back down the hall, only to be pulled sharply into the stairwell.

"You did that on purpose?" Damian's expression was dark and furious.

When Whitney mentioned seeing him with another woman, he had immediately gone on guard, his mind racing for a way to explain it to Elijah. As soon as his grandfather asked who the woman was, Damian had prepared a dozen different excuses, ready to use the best one.

But then Whitney claimed she hadn't seen the woman's face, which Damian knew was her way of warning him. Relieved, he explained to his grandfather that it was just a misunderstanding at a work event. Now, with Elijah and Samuel gone, his anger finally flared.

Damian gripped her wrist tightly, and Whitney struggled, but he didn't let go.

She lifted her head and met his gaze coldly. "Weren't you the one who started this? Damian, I have limits, and I told you, I won't let you step over me."

Damian grabbed her chin and growled, "You forced my hand! I've explained a thousand times that it's over with Rachel, but you keep bringing it up while cozying up to Noel!"

Whitney was still in a bad mood even after work.

Damian didn't show up. She was actually relieved not to have to ride in his car.

Back at her building, she stepped out of the elevator and glanced at Noel's door. His unit was quiet, as if no one was home.

After dinner, she curled up on the couch, quietly going through her laptop. The architectural design information Noel sent her last time was incredibly helpful. She even found some related industry websites and organized a ton of extra resources.

But as she stared at her screen, her mind drifted back to Noel. She hadn't heard him come home.

Just then, she heard a noise from the hallway. Instinctively, she set her laptop down, hurried to the door, and looked through the peephole. A few seconds later, she returned to the couch, a little disappointed. It wasn't Noel—just the cleaning staff.

She started feeling restless, and the material on her laptop couldn't hold her attention anymore.

Almost without thinking, she picked up her phone and typed a quick message to Noel, "My power's out again."
