When Love Is a Lie (Whitney and Damian) novel Chapter 92

Whitney felt as though she was wrapped in an invisible shackle, trapped in a muddy swamp.

No matter how hard she tried to climb out, she couldn't escape. Her chest felt weighed down, as if it were filled with stones.

She took a deep breath and lifted her head.

Up ahead, two workers were carrying a heavy piece of tempered glass.

Nearby, the sound of a crane echoed through the air. Following the sound, Whitney noticed an open clearing behind the trees where larger cabins were under construction.

She walked forward while watching. Just as she was passing one of the workers, he stumbled over something and lost his balance.

The heavy tempered glass suddenly tilted and it came crashing toward her.

"Watch out!" A sharp, urgent voice sounded from behind.

Whitney turned around. Before she could see clearly, she was yanked aside by a rushing figure.

A loud crash echoed as the tempered glass smashed into the group where she had been standing moments before, creating a deep dent in the hard, packed earth.

The area near the foot of the mountain seemed undeveloped, and the ground hadn't been paved with flagstones yet. Otherwise, the tempered glass would likely have shattered into pieces.

"You were walking so absentmindedly," came Noel's slightly irritated voice from above her. The still-shaken Whitney finally came back to her senses.

Whitney looked up with her pale face and imagined what would happen if the glass had hit her.

Seeing her startled expression, Noel pressed his lips together and said no more.

"I just saw the construction over there and…" Whitney trailed off, suddenly realizing she was still held in his arms. She quickly pulled away.

Recalling the danger just now and how he had appeared in time, Whitney asked, "Were you following me?"

From the tactical arena to here, one had to pass through a small wooded area.

If he hadn't been following her, how would he have shown up just in time?

Noel's hands suddenly felt empty. He discreetly touched his fingertips before putting his hands into his pockets.

"You blocked my way."

Whitney was speechless.

The workers were also frightened, having almost injured someone. Seeing that they were both fine, they hurried over to apologize.

Understanding that they were just workers and that no one was hurt, Whitney didn't blame them, but she did remind them to be more cautious.

"Sorry about that. The mountain road's too rough for vehicles, so we had to carry everything up ourselves. I must have slipped on a stone," one of the workers explained.

Whitney gestures toward the new construction. "What's being built over there? Is it part of the manor's project?"

"Yes. They are adding stargazing rooms and tree houses," he replied before hurrying off to deliver the glass and moving forward.

As someone with an architectural background, Whitney was always interested in various buildings. Since she has nothing else to do, she decided to take a closer look. With that in mind, she changed direction.
