Seeing Claire shine so brightly ignited a fire of jealousy within Vanessa. She couldn't stand how dazzling Claire looked.
Claire's features were a perfect blend of Nathan and Adah's best traits. Knowing how beautiful Claire was only fueled Vanessa's desire to sabotage her, wishing she could mar that pretty face.
What was that wretch doing here? Could she be trying to seduce Sean?
The mere thought made Vanessa loathe Claire even more.
Claire gave Vanessa a fleeting glance, her face utterly devoid of expression. Today was her grandmother's birthday celebration, and she had no intention of engaging with irrelevant people.
Clutching the gift box tightly, Claire turned to Andie and said, "Let's go."
With no one else around, Vanessa dropped her facade, her eyes glinting with jealousy and resentment as she glared at Claire. "Dressing like a floozy, are you planning to snag a man at the party?"
"A jailbird like you should only aspire to be some old man's mistress!" Her voice was sharp and grating, echoing through the empty corridor.
Claire kept walking, her expression unruffled. She was well aware of Vanessa's vile nature and had long grown accustomed to such baseless insults. During her time in prison, she had endured countless humiliations. A few spiteful words were nothing in comparison.
She refused to let someone like Vanessa ruin her mood. This day was about her grandmother, and she intended to honor that above all else.
The more Claire dismissed her, the angrier Vanessa became. In her mind, Claire should have been breaking down, sobbing and screaming back at her.
Whenever Claire got upset, her parents and brother would rally behind Vanessa, turning against Claire. This tactic had always worked.
