"Let me explain."
The security guard started, "We noticed someone lurking around the Bentley for quite a while... So we detained him to ask if you knew him. If not, should we call the cops?"
Sophia was unsure of what to do, so she looked back at Gilbert, who had already stood up and approached.
"Mr. Johnson, what do you think?"
"I'll handle it."
"Sure."
Gilbert turned to the guards, "Could you guys show me his picture, if you have one?"
"We do."
One of the guards took out his phone, scrolled for a bit, and handed it over to Gilbert. "Take a look, do you recognize him?"
Gilbert took the phone, saw a completely unfamiliar face, and forwarded the picture to his own phone.
He handed the phone back to the guard, "Thanks for your effort, but I don't know this man. Let him go."
"Let him go?"
"Yes."
Gilbert nodded, clearly indicating that if the guards had approached them, the car must be fine.
Otherwise, they would have headed straight to the police station.
"Well, alright then."
The guards were puzzled but since the car owner wasn't pressing charges, they didn't press further. "Sorry for the inconvenience."
"Take care."
After the guards left, Gilbert went back to the dining table.
The apartment wasn't big, so Sherilyn had overheard the conversation.
She felt uneasy about not pursuing it further, "Just let him go? No need to involve the police?"
Especially since he had been attacked with a machete not long ago.
"Calling the police won't do any good."
Gilbert smirked slightly, a hint of amusement in his eyes, "He didn't actually do anything, and he wouldn't say anything to the police anyway."
So, they had no choice but to let him go.
