But how could he possibly stop Gilbert?
"High treason? You think I care?"
"Absolutely not!" Naylor winced, holding back the pain, "I'm doing this for your good! It's just a woman, for heaven’s sake. You can have your pick of any kind, as many as you want!"
"Absolutely not! A woman from a modest background doesn't belong in high society. Your mom is the perfect example!"
That statement hit Gilbert like a thunderbolt, freezing him in place.
His mother...
How long had it been since he last thought of her? So long that her image was starting to fade...
Taking advantage of his daze, Nolan helped Naylor up and handed him a piece of gauze.
Naylor took it, pressing it against the cut on his neck.
"Look, man."
Naylor spoke with a depth of feeling, "A woman from a humble background is shallow. You think she's into you for you? She's just after your wealth..."
"That's not true!"
Gilbert's expression changed as he snapped back to reality, "Sherilyn is different! She's not like that!"
If only she were after his wealth, that would be something. But she couldn't care less about his money!
"Look, man," Naylor sighed, "I'm getting old. Just come back home."
Home?
Had he heard that right?
Gilbert squinted, tilting his head as if he couldn't believe his ears, "All this madness, just to get me back to the Harrison family?"
"Ha."
Naylor chuckled, shaking his head slightly.
"I know you're harboring resentment. But, look, man, once you're back, the entire Harrison family is yours. You should know, the Harrisons are no less prestigious than the Johnsons, perhaps even more so..."
"You think I give a damn?"
Suddenly, Gilbert's lips curled in a sinister smirk, a chilling aura enveloping him.
"Gilbert Harrison died a long time ago! The life you thought you gave me, I've returned it already! Now, I've nothing to do with you, Naylor!"
"My name is Gilbert!"
