Sherilyn had finally woken up, and things seemed to have settled down.
The nurse, holding a glass of water, helped her drink and pointed towards the doorway, "That gentleman, he left for a bit but came back. He's still waiting outside."
Which gentleman?
Sherilyn blinked in confusion. Was it Edgar?
Reading her thoughts, the nurse clarified, "Not Mr. Ferguson. It's the other one, the one with a bit of a temper."
Oh. That clicked for Sherilyn. It was Gilbert. He came back? He's quite persistent.
After setting the glass down and wiping her lips, the nurse added, "But no visitors tonight, I'm afraid. Doctor's orders."
The nurse helped Sherilyn lie back down. "Try to get some sleep."
"Okay," Sherilyn nodded.
As the nurse tucked her in, she muttered, looking towards the door, "Still hasn't left, huh? Looks like he's planning to spend the night."
Sherilyn closed her eyes, deciding to ignore that piece of information.
She drifted off to sleep, and upon waking, felt much better than the night before. The burning sensation in her throat had eased, and she didn't feel as weak.
Outside, daylight had broken.
...
Upon entering the ward, Edgar spotted Gilbert, looking rather disheveled at the door.
Edgar was surprised not by Gilbert's presence, but by his haggard appearance. Dark circles under his eyes, bloodshot gaze, and a stubble covering his jawline, indicating a night without sleep. And he was still in yesterday's clothes.
Had Gilbert come back after leaving last night and spent the entire time here?
He stood at the door, hesitant to enter, probably fearing rejection like the night before.
Approaching him, Edgar nodded, "Gilbert."
Despite their differences, basic courtesy was maintained.
