Should I just blurt it out to her? Is it even appropriate? She's just beginning to see clearly again, and her eyes are still healing.
And what about James? Would she accept him?
James, born out of wedlock and brought into this world through adversity. Initially, Rebecca had cast him aside...
Francis had been considering that once her vision fully returned, he could arrange some opportunities for mother and son to bond.
He hoped that Rebecca’s maternal instincts would kick in, fostering a connection between them, and everything would naturally fall into place.
"Mr. Francis?"
His prolonged silence and apparent daydreaming elicited a chuckle from Rebecca. "Is that question really so hard to answer?"
"Yes," Francis nodded, his brows furrowed in concern. "It's quite complex, indeed very hard to answer."
Rebecca blinked in surprise at his earnest response, momentarily lost for words. "Then, let me ask something else... Mr. Francis, do you like me?"
Francis froze, completely taken aback. At thirty-one, no one had ever confronted him so directly with such a question!
Faced with his silence once more, Rebecca sighed softly. "I'll answer for you then, Mr. Francis. You don't like me."
Francis was astonished. "Why would you say that?"
"Why?" Rebecca laughed lightly, shaking her head. "Mr. Francis, I may have been blind, but my heart isn't. I can tell whether you like me or not."
Francis frowned, puzzled. "Is it because I haven't been good to you?"
"No, you've been very kind to me," Rebecca said, her demeanor turning serious.
"But kindness can come in many forms. Like the love from parents to their child, from siblings, from comrades in arms, or from someone who has feelings... Your kindness towards me doesn’t fit into that last category."
"So I should...?" Francis stammered, struggling to find the words. "How can I show you that I like you?"
Rebecca couldn't help but laugh at his question. "Liking someone is a matter of the heart, not just actions, you know?"
He didn't understand. Francis scowled, completely at a loss.
