As they were speaking, Sherilyn walked in.
"Mommy!"
Jenna wriggled free from Gilbert and rushed towards Sherilyn.
"Hey there."
Sherilyn caught her daughter in a hug, surprised and chuckling, "What's all this about? You still think of mommy even with Mr. Gilbert around?"
"Mommy."
Jenna's chubby cheeks rubbed against her mom's neck, her voice a bit hoarse.
"Jenna's not scared, and you shouldn't be either."
Sherilyn paused, her nose tingling, eyes quickly filling with tears.
She quickly lifted her head, blinking rapidly, struggling to hold back her tears, "Alright, mommy and Jenna are both brave."
"Mommy." Jenna lifted her tiny hand, hooking her little finger, "Pinky promise."
"...Okay." Sherilyn, with tears in her eyes, smiled and hooked her daughter's tiny finger.
"A pinky promise means we have to keep our word!"
"Mhm, okay."
Sherilyn choked up in agreement, pulling her daughter tightly into her embrace...
Everything was ready.
Galen and Jenna, one after the other, were taken into the operating room.
The surgery was expected to last about six hours.
Edgar and Rebecca White had come over, but given the lengthy surgery, Sherilyn had them leave after Jenna was taken in.
Edgar glanced at Gilbert from a distance. Ever since he had shared Gilbert's story with Sherilyn, he wasn't sure where they stood now.
Had they reconciled?
But now wasn't the time to ask.
Edgar nodded, not insisting on staying. After all, Jenna's parents were there.
And he wasn't someone special to Sherilyn, nor to Jenna. Staying might just pressure Sherilyn.
"I'll head off then, come back in the evening."
Rebecca White did the same, "I've got a double shift today, I'll get off early and come by. Text me if you need anything brought over."
