"Cough, cough! Cough, cough, cough..."
After delivering such a lengthy speech, Sherilyn was seized by a violent coughing fit, bending over, her body hunched as if she might cough out her lungs. Gilbert watched, feeling as though his own lungs ached in empathy. He raised his hand, gently patting her back, waiting for her to catch her breath.
"Sherilyn, I'm not with Caroline... There's nothing between us..."
"Nothing?"
Sherilyn raised an eyebrow lazily, scoffing, "That's not what she told me. She said you two are together! Living together!"
"!!" Gilbert was shocked, vehemently denying, "No!"
"She told me herself! Whom am I supposed to believe?"
Sherilyn clearly didn't trust him, "Men's words are often deceitful. I tend to believe her..."
"It's really not true!"
Gilbert was anxious, pacing back and forth. "I don't know why she would say that... but I swear, it's not true!"
Sherilyn repeated her stance, "I don't believe you."
"What do I need to do for you to believe me?"
Gilbert thought for a moment, "Should I call Charles over? And the housekeeper, oh, and we have home surveillance..."
"No need to go through all that trouble."
Sherilyn chuckled and shook her head, her gaze drifting slightly.
"Just end it with her, and I'll believe you."
What? Gilbert was stunned, momentarily frozen.
"Can't do it, huh?"
As expected.
Sherilyn knew, her lips curving slightly as she pointed towards the door, "Then leave, don't waste my time."
"Sherilyn!"
Gilbert refused to leave, his brow furrowed deeply.
"Caroline has been kind to me, I owe her, I was really just taking care of her..."
