Gilbert could tell Sherilyn was still hung up on the whole 'Saul debacle'. Taking the initiative, he broached the subject.
"Saul's mess is still being looked into by Nolan. Don't worry, we won't let it slide under the rug."
The mere mention of it soured Sherilyn's mood. "Is that all you can talk about?"
Knock, knock.
The sound at the door heralded the arrival of the waiter with their dinner.
"Let's not talk about it anymore. How about we eat instead?" Gilbert suggested, trying to lighten the mood.
Sherilyn let her eyes drop slightly, nodding in agreement. "Fine, let's eat."
After a pause, she added, "And once we're done, you should probably leave."
Gilbert's smile faltered at her words, revealing a bitter sweetness. Without further comments, he pulled out a chair for her.
"Let's just focus on dinner for now."
As the door opened and the dishes were served one by one, Gilbert eagerly helped Sherilyn with her plate, his enjoyment apparent.
Sherilyn, on the other hand, was quickly getting overwhelmed. "That's enough, it's too much. It's killing my appetite! Do you even know how to serve properly?"
"Ha, okay," he chuckled, unfazed by her reproach.
Sherilyn shot him a puzzled look. "What's so funny?"
"I'm happy," Gilbert replied, pulling out a napkin to dab at the corner of her mouth where sauce had smeared. "Sherilyn, I wish you wouldn't shut me out or push me away. Even scolding me is better than nothing."
Sherilyn was speechless.
Does this guy ever think straight?
After dinner, they headed back to the film set.
Sherilyn waved Gilbert off. "No need to see me off. You're busy too, just go."
"Sherilyn..."
Watching her retreating figure, Gilbert shook his head in resignation.
...
Of course, Gilbert didn't leave. He booked a room at the hotel where Sherilyn's film crew was staying and spent the afternoon dealing with work.
Outside, the day slowly faded to evening.
When he finally looked up from his work, it was already dark.
"Is it that late already?"
