"Don't be nervous."
There was a slight smile on Francis's face as he spoke, "I'm not saying all this expecting an immediate response from you."
It was just that ever since his grandmother was hospitalized, he had been unable to reach her. He wanted to discuss things with her but never found the opportunity.
"I just want you to know where I stand: I'm not playing games with you, nor am I interested in just flirting. I'm serious about wanting to be with you."
He paused for a moment before continuing.
"As for my grandmother, she won't influence me. Besides, she might not agree now, but that doesn't mean she won't ever come around."
After all, she was James's mom!
It's hard to fight the inevitable, just as eyelids tend to droop with time.
As long as James can't do without Rebecca White, eventually, the grandmother would compromise for the sake of her son.
Rebecca White listened quietly, her heart racing uncontrollably.
"I should stop here,"
Francis gently halted the conversation with a sigh, "Right now, the most important thing is your grandfather's surgery."
He looked deeply into her eyes, his voice steady and gentle, "I'll wait with you."
Rebecca White nodded silently.
"By the way..."
Wanting to distract her from her worries, Francis tried to make conversation.
"Do you not visit your family often?"
"Yeah." Rebecca nodded.
"Do they..." Francis frowned slightly, "treat you badly?"
"It's not exactly that."
Rebecca White pursed her lips, shaking her head. "My relationship with my father's side has always been distant. Over the years... it's become even less frequent. It's awkward when we meet; we have nothing to say to each other."
The main issue was the 'scandal' from years ago.
Her family saw her as the 'guilty party.' Whenever they met, including Kearney, there would be a 'heartfelt lecture.'
They wanted her to feel shame, to repent, and to be doubly good to Eddy...
They wanted her to understand that after what she did, Eddy still wanting her meant she should be grateful. No matter how Eddy treated her, she was expected to endure, to keep enduring...
Gradually, she stopped interacting much with her relatives.
Francis seemed to understand, guessing the general situation.
