A Whisper that went unheard novel Chapter 124

Melody was stunned as Jeremy walked out.

The break room fell silent. Nurses and doctors who had been chatting bit their tongues after what Jeremy had said.

He had made it clear he might never marry her.

More than one set of eyes turned toward Melody, some of them full of pity.

Tiffany had never expected Jeremy to say those words. She slipped an arm around Melody's shoulders and comforted her. "What kind of man is that? I used to think he was the most charming man at Jembina Hospital. Turns out he's not that good after all."

Melody felt as if someone had clenched her heart in a fist, squeezing hard until it hurt to breathe.

She dared not let the pain show. She dug her nails into her palms and forced herself to swallow it down. Then, she lifted her head and tried to sound casual. "He's right, though. People break up every day. An engagement isn't much more certain than dating."

Her voice shook on the last word, giving away a flash of hurt.

She had thought the bond between her and Jeremy was starting to change, but clearly, in his mind, it might never move beyond being fiancés in name only.

The ache in her chest felt like suffocation. She used every ounce of will to keep her back straight.

She looked at Tiffany and spoke slowly and seriously. "I know you were standing up for me, but Krystal has the Wardolf family behind her. Don't cross her. They protect their own."

Since Andrew and Laura felt guilty toward Krystal, they would never allow anyone to bully her.

If today's scene reached them, Tiffany's job could be on the line.
