Melody's head snapped up. "What did you say?"
"I can dig out every detail," Denvin said.
Her heart tightened. She was about to speak, but then something struck her. She gritted her teeth and asked Denvin, "What do you want from me?"
He chuckled, the look in his eyes almost approving. "You're not stupid, at least. I don't want anything except your help in court. I'm planning to sue a company. All you need to do is stand in as the plaintiff."
Melody quickly realized that Denvin was trying to use this opportunity to go after one of his rival companies. After thinking it over for a moment, she asked, "Did that company also donate expired food?"
"Of course." He casually named a company from the donor list. The milk they donated had been repackaged long after its expiration date.
Still, Melody didn't agree. Taking the matter to court was a big deal.
She lowered her gaze and said nothing. Denvin didn't press. "It's up to you. Call me once you've thought it over."
He didn't leave. His dark eyes settled on her bowed head. From where he stood, he could see her pale, slender neck. It looked so thin he could snap it with one hand.
Jeremy and Harold stepped out of the office just then and saw them.
Melody stood before a tall, handsome man with a roguish air, yet his gaze was almost gentle.
Harold was still trying to reason with Jeremy. "You were out of line back there. Melody is a young woman and also your fiancée. How could you say that in front of everyone? Have you ever thought about how awful she must have felt?
"I know you and Dr. Finnigan talk about work, but she's a woman, after all. It's normal if Melody thought too much about it. You could have explained it to her nicely..."
He kept trying to persuade Jeremy. Seeing Melody leave so heartbroken, even he could hardly stand it, but then, he noticed Jeremy suddenly stop in his tracks, his eyes fixed straight ahead.
Harold froze for a moment, then followed his gaze. "Hey, who's that?"
