A Whisper that went unheard novel Chapter 142

Jeremy's face was expressionless. "I came over after dinner. It's late, after all."

She looked confused. "So what if it's late?"

He frowned and finally noticed that something was off with Melody. She seemed completely downcast, her eyes almost overflowing with sadness.

It wasn't just sadness—it seemed mixed with some anger as well.

His voice deepened. "What did Denvin do to you?"

She shook her head. "He didn't do anything to me. He's actually helped me a lot."

Melody's voice trembled. If it hadn't been for Denvin, she wouldn't have known how badly they had been deceived.

After seeing that Jeremy still had a furrowed brow, she thought he didn't believe her, so she explained again, "Really, he's helped me a lot. If it wasn't for him, I would've been deceived for life."

She had thought this was just a small accident, but it turned out to be something premeditated all along. Tears slid down the corners of her eyes. For the first time, she felt what it was like to have her heart broken.

What had they done wrong?

Born either abandoned for being a girl, or abandoned with a broken body.

Why did that make them targets to be exploited?

Her body went limp and was caught steadily by Jeremy. He wiped the tears from her face, and she clung to him tightly as if holding onto a lifeline.

In the car by the roadside, he cupped her face, kissing the tears from the corner of her eyes.

At that moment, he didn't mind being a little gentler and considerate.

Melody, lost in that gentleness, felt like it was the only thing that could soothe the wounds inside her heart. It was the only way to release the melancholy that had been weighing on her.
